yeah i kinda wish you woulda posted it ASAP. like i said earlier, it was nice that you waited in case i had 2nd thoughts (which i did, just couldn't come up with anything great), then at least i could have passed it off as a "spur of the moment" type choice that i made at the wrong time (which it kinda was). instead i've had more than a couple minutes to think it over, so now it's just a pretty deliberate bad spew pick that i probably could have had a few rounds later...

Cobain pick keeps looking worse and worse fwiw. I'm ok with Cobain (along with others) > Cornell, but man. Cobain went absurdly early.

Come on... Cornell is not even close to Cobain imo. He might be a better pure singer, but Cobain is a vastly better frontman with more popularity, acclaim, influence, and pretty much whatever other criteria you want to judge picks in this by.

Plus there's just a ridiculous amount of talent in this draft, which I think people are constantly underestimating when they say xxx went too soon or it's amazing that xxx hasn't been picked yet.

EDIT: BTW I think Cornell is a fine pick, especially for that label. Just getting irked by the haterz.

I'm a huge Cornell fan and ofc love the pick. At his peak, his voice/songwriting are up there with the best in rock.

He kinda lost both, but still put in a ****ing awesome 15 years (or whatever Louder Than Love-> Out of Exile is). Reach Down still gives me shivers no matter how much I listen to it.

just some more on Cornell here. he wrote 7 of 10 songs on the Temple of the Dog album all by himself, including Hunger Strike, Say Hello 2 Heaven, and Reach Down.

not the biggest early Soundgarden fan but he wrote a bunch of those ones too, including Loud Love.

then he also wrote the following songs solo...music, lyrics, everything!:

Rusty Cage
Outshined
Searching With My Good Eye Closed
Mind Riot (more amazing singing on display)
Let Me Drown
Fell on Black Days
Black Hole Sun
Spoonman
The Day I Tried to Live
Like Suicide
Pretty Noose
Blow Up the Outside World
Burden in My Hand
No Attention

among others. plus he got co-writing credits on a bunch of others. he also put out a decent 1st solo album with songs like:

Can't Change Me
Preaching the End of the World
Sweet Euphoria
Sunshower

then there was the 3 Audioslave albums, which i'm sure he was at least a co-writer of many of the songs. obv the lead guitarist wrote his own solos though, which is probably part of the reason why each song is listed as being written by the band in total

Cochise
Show Me How to Live
Gasoline
Like a Stone
I Am the Highway

etc, etc, etc...

and you think Cornell could play with Jimi? well you tell me!

haven't heard his most recent two solo albums, but reports seem to indicate that they kinda suck, especially the latest one. ah well, can't win 'em all...

sorta caught me off guard, even a big fan like myself didn't realize what a prolific songwriter he's been over his career. for some reason i thought that a band like Soundgarden was far more collaborative than it looks to be in truth. good for my label!

dang, just seeing that list makes the pick pretty good imo. I am hugely biased towards that period of rock though. Cornell really has a sick voice. I had no idea he wrote that much stuff, but at the same time it makes his solo career so lol. Maybe he's not innovative and thats his problem. I am trying to remember what single I heard from his two most recent CD's...I sort of liked it....found it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PlqMAPbELk

Meh, probably too poppy for most. Some of the other singles from his new album blow. Really weird mix of producers on that one.

Forgot he did the title song from Casino Royale as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxAm8Y1w6BI

lol, I'm not hating.

Anyways, I'm kind of skip/listening to them and am done the first/second list. Preaching the End of the World is my fave.

Nath did the reader's digest version of a Chuck D writeup well enough and I don't have too much to add except that I think (along with his own work) he can work with Michael Jackson quite a bit. Chuck D has quite a few collaborations outside of just rap with a group of undrafteds, check his wiki. He's worked with a member of the Jackson family. Oh, and he's a huge MJ fan. Here's an excerpt of an interview with Chuck D on Michael Jackson's death, influence, and legacy:

Quote:
Katherine Lanpher:How would you say that Michael Jackson has influenced you?

Chuck D: He's been the soundtrack of my life. I was in fourth grade when that record came out, and it set fire to all the, especially young girls at the time with the Jackson 5. And yesterday when I talked to some journalists, they asked me to name three records, which is hard to do over a 40 year period of music with Michael Jackson. I immediately said "Got to Be There," "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough," and "Rock With You," just three different records from three different type of sonic environments that Michael Jackson was able to give us. I'll tell you, the shock to white America a while ago is when I told people I said, "Hey, man, my catalogue goes before when America starts finding out about Michael Jackson." And that was after Jackson 5, and then the Jacksons produced by Gamble and Huff. When most of America really caught Michael Jackson craziness was "Thriller." But I'd been kind of acclimated to Michael Jackson growing up as a kid.
Chuck D has an iconic voice, easily my favorite in rap. As for how exactly I will tie everything together in my eclectic collection of talent I'm not sure. I'l figure it out later.

Michael Jackson
Mariah Carey
Babyface
Luciano Pavoratti
Chuck D

Nath, if it does get to me before I'm back from work, my 2nd pick from the last PM would be appropriate, ty.

Ugh, gotta get some writeups done soon, ffs.
