Andre Agassi GOAT. That guy did all kinds of commercials when I was younger. He has to be the best tennis player.

Back when he was in his teens he used to say that clay was his favorite surface. I guess the problem is that there are tons of specialists out there. Who knows, maybe he'd still say that. "Favorite"doesn't necessarily have to equate to "best" I suppose.

i was joking. the problem isn't that there are clay specialists, murray simply isn't that good on clay, unless nadal, djokovic and federer who are all really good on clay (fed used to be, at least)

Huh? You can say this about every sporting event. When I watch DVRed games, I avoid sports websites/forums. I don't expect everyone else to wait till I'm done watching.

See cashy (2012) for a dissenting opinion.

Ferrer is above him as well IMO aside from those 5, he's probably the 6th best on clay?

Congrats to AM. But his career so far is just a little better than Andy Roddick's, Roscoe Tanner's and Leyton Hewitt's. still behind the likes of Nastase, Courier, and Wilander.

well when you control for competition i dont think thats very fair at all
MURRAY Quote
07-08-2013 , 04:10 AM
And how exactly do you control for competition? Jimmy Connors had a fantastic career, but it began during the Rosewall/Laver era, peaked during Borg and McEnroe, and was still going strong during Lendl, Wilander and the beginning of Agassi and Sampras.

But I rarely see his name mentioned in the top 5 anymore.

Why would be be mentioned in the top 5 now with Roger and Rafa cementing their places in he top 5. Novak almost there and guys like Laver, Borg, Samprass, Williams etc all in and around the top 5. Pretty tough to include him now IMO
MURRAY Quote

That's my point. If we're going to adjust for level-of-competition-played-against, Connors should be up there. But we don't, so he's not.
Spoiler:
He also played most of his career with the equivalent of a squash racket!

For all we know, Novak, Rafa, and Federer have just been owning sub-par competition, in comparison to the 70s, 80s, or 90s. I could argue they have lighter, stiffer rackets, better conditioning, and the surfaces are closer in playability than at any time in the past.

Of course, I don't believe that, but I do believe there is heavy recency bias on this forum when discussing the best ever. But that's normal, I guess.

lololds

some sports, like boxing for example, you watch the oldies and think 'man, muhammad ali really was something special, and that sonny liston, he could really punch. I wonder how they'd do vs the modern day fighters'

you watch old tennis and it looks like your dad and his work colleague embarrassing themselves down the local park

I can see where views like this come from but it's so wrong...

did you watch any of the mcenroes playing senior doubles at this year's championships? those guys can still hit and serve so well it's insane, and johnny mac hasn't been a top level player for over 20 years.

the combination of racket technology and sports/nutrition science has elevated modern players to a new level, but everything has to be taken in context i think.

it's scary to think what the world #1 of 2030 will be playing like tho...

oh yeah go andy!!!!
