Been thinking about doing this for a while. Was going to wait until the playoffs were over with, but with the Wizards out now I need something to lighten my spirits. Heres the rules:

Basically we're going to be drafting basketball franchises. It will be a serpintine(sp?) draft, and order will be randomly decided somehow. The goal, of course, is to build the best possible basketball team both for the now and the future.

I'll allow as people as we can get, as I think it only makes things better and harder to build a good team with a ton of people.

Players eligible to be drafted will be anyone that played in the NBA in the "modern era." I'm going to define this as players who played their rookie year in 1979-80 or later.

In our hypothetical league, each player you draft will be entering his prime. To avoid confusion, lets just say that you get each player at the age of 24. For current players who are younger than that, you get them at their current age. For players who didn't enter the NBA until later than age 24, you get them at the age in which they entered.

A player must have played at least 1 NBA game to be eligible.

A player who got injured in real life is not necessarily guaranteed to get injured in our hypothetical league. However, players who are/were injury prone in real life will also be injury prone in our hypothetical league and you should factor that into your drafting. A player who suffered a freak injury in real life is no more likely to suffer that freak injury in our league than any other player.

Because I want to get a lot of owners, I'm not going to enforce a strict time limit on each pick. It will be a casual draft, and its ok if it takes us a long time to complete. With that said, you should try to check the forum a few times each day and if you know you're going to be away for a while then PM a list of your wanted choices to someone to pick for you.

With that said, I would like heavy discussion, as I feel that will be the most interesting aspect of this all. You will be expected to do a writeup for each pick and generally explain your overall strategy. Hopefully some good debate will ensue.

Team chemistry and playing style is very much an issue.

Lets go with 9 players and one coach for each team, for a total of 10 rounds in our draft.

Any coach who coached a game from 1979-present is eligible. And you may choose to make your coach any age you wish(not older than he current is though ldo).

We could have an owner vote afterwards where you have to pick two teams other than your own, one for best current team and one for best team built for the long haul(although its very possible that you would vote for the same team in each category).

If you're interested, just post here. I wanna get at least 15 people to do it, hopefully more. If we only get a few people then we could each draft two teams. I'd be open to changing any rules you guys think would make it better.

Are you another poster? I'm just curious since I've never seen you post in any NBA threads before. You're definitely more than welcome to be in this...as I said, just curious.

I browse the sporting events forum pretty regularly and post sporadically. I'm not a super knowledgeable hoops fan, but this sounds like fun.

Not sure if I can be in on this yet, I guess it depends when it ends. Just wanted to add that if I had first pick I take Shaq, just to stir up discussion.

I'd be interested in this but I won't be around much/at all next weekend so I don't know if that's a problem.

For those who want to be in but may not be around 100% of the time.....If you want, just send me or someone else a draft list of yours when you're away and I'll pick for you. I'd much rather have good turnout but it take much longer than only get like 10 people. I mean really i don't care if this takes 10 months because people are slow with picks...as long as debate/discussion is good I'm happy.

If Shaq had MJ's motivation and stayed at his peak as long as MJ did then I think you can make a good case for him. As is though, it comes across as you picking him just for the sake of being different.

im in, but whats the criteria for "winning" a game? If it's based on people voting I'm out.

I really don't care much about winning. I think the discussion will be a lot more interesting. Like I said in OP, we'll just do an owner vote to satisfy those who want a winner. If you can think of a better method, then I'll be willing to consider it.

run the fantasy draft into a video game and sim the season and playoffs and see who wins

only problem with that is it doesn't take future considerations when drafting into account

i might be a little busy with papers/finals...but I'm considering doing this

I did this with a few buddies in Madden one year. We all drafted a team, and played against each other in coach mode to get rid of any player advantages. I'm not familiar with BBall video games, but I suspect it'll be much more difficult to pull that off. Also, I doubt it'll prove much, other than the fact that the principle parties are huge nerds.

The problem with running it in a video game is that the video game has preset ratings for each player in each category. Obviously we're not going to all agree with those ratings, so it'd just be a biased source. I mean, I'm pretty sure that I know more about basketball than some video game designer, so why go by what he says?

I don't mind doing multiple competitions though, so if someone wants to do the video game thing, while I won't put too much stock into it, you can be my guest.

Let's run this. Get ready boys. Nique, number 1 pick. jk, or am I?

FWIW, I can't get on 2p2 from work, so any picks of mine won't be done from ~630am to ~430pm. Also, I set up a simple website chronicling the long and slow fantasy football draft we did 2 years ago and would be up for doing a similar thing this time.
