Round 2 Pick 20: John Rocker, January/February 2000

From wiki:

For a story published in the January 2000 issue of Sports Illustrated, Rocker made a number of allegations stemming from his experiences in New York City and answering a question about whether he would ever play for the New York Yankees or the New York Mets. Rocker's response was considered racist, homophobic, and sexist:

Quote:
"I'd retire first. It's the most hectic, nerve-racking city. Imagine having to take the 7 Train to the ballpark looking like you're riding through Beirut next to some kid with purple hair, next to some queer with AIDS, right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time, right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It's depressing... The biggest thing I don't like about New York are the foreigners. You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. Asians and Koreans and Vietnamese and Indians and Russians and Spanish people and everything up there. How the hell did they get in this country?"
During the interview, he also made his true feelings about the New York Mets and their fans known:

Quote:
"where else in the country do people spit at you, throw bottles at you, throw quarters at you, throw batteries at you and say, 'Hey, I did your mother last night — she's a whore.' I talked about what degenerates they were and they proved me right."
The interview was conducted while driving to a speaking engagement in Atlanta. The reporter wrote that during the interview session, Rocker spat on a Georgia 400 toll machine and mocked Asian women. Also, he supposedly referred to black teammate Randall Simon as a "fat monkey".

In June 2006, Rocker defended the right of free speech of former teammate Ozzie Guillén, at the time the manager of the Chicago White Sox, for comments deemed homophobic (Guillén had referred to Chicago Sun-Times sports columnist Jay Mariotti as a "***"). Guillén, a native of Venezuela, claimed it was not a derogatory term and that, in Venezuela, the term only questions another man's courage rather than his sexual orientation.

Quote:
"This is a free country. If he wants to use a lewd term, he should be able to use a lewd term. Can't you use a lewd term in America if you want"?
Referring to sensitivity training, he was quoted as saying:

Quote:
"It was a farce, a way for the scared little man, Bud Selig, to get people off his ass".
He claimed that when he attended mandatory sensitivity training he would seldom remain longer than 15 minutes. He also claimed he never paid the $500 fine that was levied against him.

I know that its a weird pairing, but I think think that 8 cast members gives us enough to have two main storylines in the house. For me, Anna and the partylife will be one, while Rocker's confrontation and interaction with some other housemates will be the other.

Team so far:

Anna Kournikova 2002
John Rocker 2000

Chad Javon Johnson Esteban Ocho Cinco

Quote:
There’s a very easy way to get on our list of fools – change your name to the Spanish translation of your number. Chad Ocho Cinco, you’re a fool.

But a fool in the best sense of the word, for he’s always entertaining, and brings press to the NFL, and the lowly Bengals. His touchdown celebrations are second only to Terrell Owens. But what solidified him on this list is when he raced against a horse. Of course he had a sizeable lead, but anytime an athlete faces off against an animal, you can count us among the thoroughly interested. When you watch Ocho Cinco, you know you’re going to get a good show.

why the fk did we do reverse snake here? snake would be soooooooooooo much faster and keep everyone more interested (as evidence by right now). also, as seen, this is a complete crapshoot and bookend picks make things more interesting imo.
I decided on reverse snake before draft spots were done. Obviously we can't bring it up now because the guys with early picks will all want snake while those with late round picks will all want reverse snake.

DAMN! Ocho was the other tossup between Shaq for me and g-bebe.

I don't know how he fell this far, should of been an easy top 5 IMO. Especially after Hard Knocks. Taking Dwight, Mcguire, Kobe, AK, over him? Child please

By top heavy I meant that the value of early 1st round picks was much better than the value of late 1st round picks, and therefore we have to equalize that by giving those who draft late in the 1st a reverse snake draft. You pointing out that McGuire and Howard aren't great picks(I think thats your point) only proves my point.

jon rocker matched up w/ john amaechi would of been great too; but two guys from the same sport would probably give more dialogue

How did 85 fall so far anyways? He's proven reality show gold, way more valuable than a guy like Arod or Kobe.

im saying its super deep because there is no "value" to anyone. its not like there are 20 guys who EVERYONE has as their top 20, people are just going to target a ****ton of different guys because everyone's power rankings are different. i think by the time we get past the "top 5 or 10" (which we just about have already) then everyone else will just be "fit" picks.

i think if everyone has vastly different big board, it can't be considered top heavy.

Actually let me change my statement: I don't have another woman in the "sex appeal" category in my top 100. I do have other females I think belong in the top 100 due to other factors though.

That means that imo Anna is far and away the best in her category, which is why I had he ranked so highly(#2 overall).

Even on looks alone, Anna is head and shoulders above the field. But then you factor in dating history, willingness to be shown in a sexual nature in front of all the viewers, propensity to party, and her popularity, and the result is that nobody is even close to her imo.

is there any way that i can redraft my first pick? I was under the impression that we would decide the format of our show, not that we were just doing Real World Athletes House.

If not its cool, but i'd appreciate the opportunity for a redraft

I say scrap the whole Real World requirement, why limit yourself to one format when you can come up with your own awesome ideas? Let OJ find the real killers I say!
