49ers can't make the helmet black because players can only wear 1 helmet. nfl introduced this rule a few years ago. you can change decals, but teams don't have enough time to paint helmets between games with safety testing and whatnot. it's the reason why the cowboys can't wear that thanksgiving throwback anymore.

I love how Dilfer is going to be talking up Kaep's improvement all night because he had a hand in the training (though in his defense, he did say today on local radio that it might not really be evident until 8-10 games in)
