we all know sonnen is entertaining in interviews and at press conferences but in the octagon his fighting style is always the same boring wrestling stuff. he rarely finishes fights and usually relies on a decision because his stiking and sub game are weak.
take down > hold the guy down > land weak-medium punches that score points but never KO a guy or cut him badly.
this is the problem with wrestlers in the UFC. they need to be able to sub/strike too and sonnen really can't. his only plan is take down and hold and win by decision. look at GSP, Jones, Maynard, Lesnar, Edgar, Henderson + tons more... all great wrestlers but can do other stuff.
sonnen is soooooo boring in the cage. hope he takes a slow beating like okami did. keep being made to get up. take that wrestling **** to the olympics. this is fighting.
Chael definitely has difficulty finishing people, more than half of his wins are by decision, and that's including plenty of fights where he's been in a dominant position almost the entire time
Chael's record in the UFC is 6-4 to Silva's 14-0, and I don't really agree with Chael that Silva's record is padded, they've both fought equally tough opponents
On paper it looks like Chael should be a serious underdog, but when you watch their first fight, it just looks like Chael's style might be Silva's cryptonite
But at the same time, in that bout, while Chael was clearly winning the point fight, Anderson seemed to do more damage to Chael in full guard than Chael could do to Anderson in Anderson's full guard. Anderson did it all with his elbows, and actually did a ton of damage to Chael, people forget that
Chael has bad sinuses too, I don't know if he's blowing his nose which you're not supposed to do with a broken nose, but his eyes swell up really easily and obstruct his vision, I've seen that crazy swelling happen to him in multiple fights
If I was in Chael's corner I'd tell him to work on his elbow striking in his opponent's full guard which is a big trend right now. It lets you strike while your hands and forearms are in a defensive position without really exposing yourself, and elbows can really cut a guy's face up, ruin his vision, and break his will
Somebody who's as good at getting the takedown as Chael should really be training his ability to do damage from that position he gets into so often. Right now that position takes him to decision victories because he's focusing more on not giving the other guy a chance to stand up (that instinct is probably a remnant of his wrestling background). He should really be trying to maximize damage dealt, and if that means using your elbows and giving the other guy a chance to get back to his feet, so be it, you're Chael, you'll get him back down again anyway.
Griffin/Ortiz is a retirement fight for Tito, win or lose. Le/Cote is meh for me, Cote has been out of the UFC and Le is 40 and fading.
Menijvar/Easton in the BW division should be a fun fight. Chad Mendes (#2 or #3 FW in the world) has a squash match.
Nurmagomedov is a potential rising star imo. Big step up in competition in Gleison Tibau, who is massive for the LW division.
Couldn't think a worse opponent for McKenzie. A wrestler with no neck who's clearly a level up from him as a fighter. Not to clear on the "squash" reference. Squash is easy?? or not contact?
