He had Monaco in 2nd to last in Ligue 1 before he got sacked in his only coaching stint. The only interesting thing is if he’ll be able to recruit players to the Impact. Also, when the Impact are struggling halfway through the season he can also throw on a uniform and instantly be one of the best players on the squad.

Pretty good article:

https://theathletic.com/1379222/2019...e-complicated/

Just a small bit of the article but I didn't realize less than a million people watched MLS Cup. That's an embarrassing number for "one of the top leagues in the world"

Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced their new sporting director on Friday, unveiling veteran German executive Axel Schuster as their choice following an “extensive global search.”

Schuster arrives in British Columbia after a three-year stint at Schalke 04, where he served as senior director of professional football, and previously worked as the head of football operations at FSV Mainz 05 for some 16 years. He will oversee “all technical aspects of Whitecaps FC from youth to first team,” reporting directly to ownership.

yo rb, plz tell me that this guy knows what he's doing
(not that it really matters, should be almost impossible for him not to be an upgrade on what they had, so...)

tho a lot of the reaction i saw from germany was ppl being surprised that he got this job, thinking it was beyond his experience etc

Vancouver should've sent a message by making their whole team available for the expansion draft.

The Timbers suing Necaxa is the most Timbers thing ever.

Have you read that whole story? Sounds like a pretty crazy situation.

Fernández is obviously pretty talented, and was averaging a goal a match when his head was right, but sounds like he has issues with alcohol which started to come up towards the end of the season. As it turns out, he didn't pass the wellness protocol or whatever, so they let him go.

PTFC is furious b/c he's their most expensive player ever and they invested quite a bit in him. Apparently they had had an open line of communication with Necaxa for a little while to check in on the player and iron out the details. Necaxa kept saying "yah, he's good, he's in a good place". Stuff of that nature.

Now obviously you have to do your due diligence and find out for yourself, which maybe the Timbers never did. I get the feeling Necaxa was ready to move on from him and felt like they had a sucker lined up. Fernández got a red card and spit on a fan in his last match, so the evidence was there that maybe he's not the guy you want to make your most expensive player ever.

Can't imagine the Timbers will get much of anything in return unless there are very specific clauses in the contract, which it doesn't sound like there are. They knew the risks, and it didn't pan out.

Sucks as a casual b/c he was fun to watch and one of the more talented guys in the league and probably could have flirted with 25-30+ goals had he been 100% the whole season.

Not sure what you’re referring to when you say “that whole story”. I’ve read the Athletic article.

Suing Necaxa because the mercurial striker with a drug problem had a drug problem and acted erratic is very funny. Unless there was demonstrable evidence of fraud on the part of Necaxa, extremely unlikely there are any contractual hooks.

Henry trying to use his Belgium connection to lure Dries Mertens. If he can get players like that, it won't even matter that he probably doesn't know how to coach.

LAG has extended Pavón and are reportedly entering the Cavani sweepstakes.

SKC's Busio is drawing interest from some big clubs (EPL, Fiorentina).

Nico Lodeiro might be headed to Liga MX.

Miami into the eastern conference
Nashville to the west until they can realign (or not?)

Charlotte in as the next team after that?

thought Sacramento, St.Louis, Detroit, etc were also on deck
i can't keep track anymore...

might as well go to 40 teams and split east/west like mlb or something
and don't say pro/rel, these guys are not paying hundreds of millions in expansion fees to get shipped into bolivian

What a mess and what a joke. Gonna be awesome when we have 30 team playoffs in a 40-team league. This league is not sustainable

Yah, I mentioned last time expansion was brought up that if they're gonna keep expanding then just go to 40 teams and split into 2 leagues.

Dream scenario would be to play each team in your 20 team "league" home and away for a 38-game slate, then have the 2 league winners play in either a Super Bowl, 1 off match, home and away, or maybe even a longer series.

But they're hell-bent on long playoffs so like LFC said, the end game is probably a 16-team playoffs like NBA/NHL.
