Someone help me out with the logic of this playoff format, please.

Single elimination games for 3/6, 4/5. Fine.

Two game matches for the divisional semifinals and finals. Makes sense.

Then on to the Cup Final. This is the big event, so of course it's...a single elimination game? wat

This is something I was somewhat aware of before but hadn't double-checked since I had no horse in the race, but now that I have, I'm mystified.

Why would you want to make the most important match a single game? It doesn't seem to make sense from either a competitive or revenue generation standpoint.

And the other problem with the format is that you take divisional matches, when teams have really earned their place in the standings over one another, and reduce the home field advantage by having two game matches. Then when you move to the Cup Final, when records are arguably not as comparable with an unbalanced schedule, and ramp home field advantage up to the max by making it a one game match.

Please, someone help me. What am I missing?

Bobo: don't think you're missing anything. playoffs in all sports are a lolvariancefest. 2-leg finals are probably not ideal bc ppl just want a winner decided, rather than a championship being shipped on away goals or something. i dunno, it is what it is.

I actually hadn't suggested that, but there does seem to be some sense in it - why is that so ridiculous?

Perhaps this will bring more LOLs, but - 3 leg final!

Best of 7. No shootout, sudden death overtime

Bookies seem to think so! TOR/RBNY o/u is 3 and POR/HOU is 2.5 with money on the over. I'm on the Timbers/Dynamo under +108 fwiw

Sounds great!

Yeah, I know this can't be done like MLB/NBA/NHL. But I don't see why it couldn't be a 2 leg final, just like the previous rounds. And if 72off is correct about the issue being the possibility of deciding the championship on road goals (which I agree isn't great), then just finish the second game the same way they do with the current single game format.

Back when 80% of the league made the playoffs, they did have best of 3 playoff series, but of course the final was a 1-off game at a neutral site. Since they've abandoned the neutral site, they certainly could go 2-legged final. Liga MX has 2 legged series throughout the playoffs, and with better tiebreakers than away goals: higher seed advances in quarters and semis, no tiebreaker in final, only extra time and then penalties.

The main argument against of course is that the season is long enough, and supposedly everyone likes the pomp and finality of the single game.

Toronto are so much better than everybody. Gonna be hilarious when they don't win the whole thing.

Obligatory Do away goals count in MLS playoffs? I'm pretty sure they do. Someone confirm?
