Holy ****, just saw the Henry goal.... WOW

I dont think I've ever seen a goal like that right off the post... I've replayed that goal like 6 times, and every time it looks magnificent. Incredible goal.

EDIT: BTW, even though the keeper was cheating near side, there was only a small chance he would've stopped that ball even if he wasn't. The angle that the ball went over the top of the bar, there was no way the keeper gets to that unless he times it perfectly for when it hits the top of the post on its way down. Beautiful goal.

Game Reports

Toronto FC 1 - 2 Chicago Fire
Man, I never thought Chicago would look this good after losing Pappa and Grazzini. I've seen plenty of stuff from Fire fans about how Pappa was hit-or-miss, but he seemed at least like a useful MLS player. But now, with MacDonald, Rolfe, and Fernandez, omg.

On the plus side for TFC, Luis Silva continues to look like a budding star. His control and assist on Hassli's goal, and with Berry on his back no less, was...wow.

Sporting Kansas City 1 - 1 Houston Dynamo
If Sporting wants to be the best team in the East they need to not play games like this. In almost a textbook copy of how Houston beat SKC in the playoffs last season, they came in and allowed SKC to control possession and take bad shots. It's not that Sporting was bad this game, it's just that Houston gave them what they knew was the lesser of two evils. Sporting blasted a ton of shots, but few were truly dangerous.

Everyone in the playoffs is going to try to clog up the game against SKC, and they're going to have to be better.

Los Angeles Galaxy 2 - 0 Colorado Rapids
If this were Europe, Colorado's coach would've been gone months ago. The 4-3-3 is not working here.

Toronto FC 1 - 1 Philadelphia Union
If the two worst teams in MLS play to a draw does anyone really care?

Portland Timbers 1 - 1 Seattle Sounders
Portland had a chance to clinch the Cascadia Cup but Fredy Montero made sure that wouldn't happen. And seriously, what a hell of a goal it was by the Colombian. Rodney Wallace pulled the tying goal back, and then Bright Dike missed what should've been the game winner.

And now we set up for an interesting climax to the only thing Portland has left to play for. If Seattle can handle their business against Vancouver next weekend, the Timbers will visit Seattle on October 7th with the Cascadia Cup on the line. If Portland wins, they get to raise the cup on Seattle's pitch. If Seattle wins (or ties most likely, but depends on the VAN/SEA result) they repeat as Cascadia Cup champions.

New York Red Bulls 3 - 1 Columbus Crew
We've all seen the Henry goal so no reason to point that out here. He was a monster all night and seems to be rounding back into stellar form for the playoff run. For Columbus, Higuain couldn't start the game because of a foot injury (Warzycha said he could've been lost for the season with extended playing time) and he was sorely missed in the Crew midfield.

DC United 2 - 1 New England Revolution
Big big big win. Not that a home match against New England was a hugely difficult proposition, but you never know how things are going to go after losing your team's best player and heart and soul. But Chris Pontius decided to celebrate his new contract by putting on a show agains the poor Revs. He's certainly earned his place on January camp this year, and I wouldn't be completely surprised if he makes his way onto the roster for the last batch of pre-hex WCQs (sorry Torres and/or Corona).

FC Dallas 1 - 0 Vancouver Whitecaps
Alright, we've got a race in the West! Thanks to Julian de Guzman's 96th minute winner FC Dallas is within a point of sneaking in to the final playoff spot. Vancouver has a 4-game home stand upcoming and a game in hand, so they have the leg up. But they've also been the team ****ting the bed lately while FC Dallas is only getting better.

Chicago Fire 3 - 1 Montreal Impact
Nothing to see here. Just more Fire beast-moding. MacDonald, Alex, and Fernandez all scored. That's the kind of effect you want your acquired talent to have! Friedrich had to leave in the 41st with "neck stiffness" but all signs point to him being healthy for this weekend's match.

The Fire are a fun team to watch, if you haven't caught a game yet. Winning 6 of their last 7 doesn't hurt either. The only downside is that they have Wells Thompson now, and I hate that dude.

Chivas USA 0 - 2 San Jose Earthquakes
Holy God, I could not have been any more wrong about anything than I was about Chivas acquiring all these pieces and turning in to a contender for the 5th Western Conference playoff spot. Since the beginning of July, Chivas is 1-3-7 (6 points, -15 GD). How can you add Califf, Joseph, and Agudelo and get that much worse?

Socer is already a top 3 sport, so I expect it to replace it sooner than that . . .

This obviously isn't going to get any further before the game tonight, so here are last week's scores.

Game Reports

New York Red Bulls 0 - 2 Sporting Kansas City

Columbus Crew 1 - 0 Chivas USA
Damn, son.

San Jose Earthquakes 2 - 2 Portland Timbers

Philadelphia Union 0 - 1 DC United
DC suddenly moving into 4th in the East, leaving Houston fighting it out with Columbus.

Montreal Impact 0 - 0 Sporting Kansas City

New England Revolution 1 - 1 New York Red Bulls
Did you know that New York hasn't won at New England in like a thousand years? I didn't.

Real Salt Lake 2 - 1 Portland Timbers

Chicago Fire 2 - 1 Columbus Crew

Seattle Sounders 1 - 2 San Jose Earthquakes
Big big big win for the Earthquakes. Showed they can go in to any stadium and play the game how they want to play it.

Los Angeles Galaxy 4 - 2 Toronto FC
I'm still shocked that TFC knocked LA out of the CCL. What a bad run of form the Galaxy were on to start this season.

Hopefully TFC can pull off a miracle and win in Santos to move on in CCL again.

Philadelphia Union 3 - 1 Houston Dynamo
Not a good look Houston. This is why you're

DC United 1 - 0 Chivas USA

Vancouver Whitecaps 2 - 2 Colorado Rapids
This is a very good result for FC Dallas fans. Colorado's 86th minute equalizer means that FC Dallas is only 2 points back on an equal number of games and has a 4 goal advantage in goals scored. Vancouver hosts Seattle and Dallas travels to San Jose this week, so any points for either team should be considered a plus.

Random thoughts
Well I'll be. The most recent episode of MLS Extratime Radio basically insinuates that in the near future MLS teams could have partnerships with lower American leagues (USL, NASL, etc) that allow them to send a significant number of players to those clubs for extended periods. Some teams already do this (Philly has a partnership with Harrisburg, RSL has sent players to AC St Louis and the USL version of Portland Timbers, etc) but a defined partnership that allows young players to get competitive games would be great.

It also seems like it would save money for MLS by substituting their current Reserve League, which is tough to run anyway with as few roster spots as there are. And maybe it would open up the doors for a future where (under expanded rosters) MLS teams actually have reserve teams that play in the lower leagues (like Germany and Spain, for instance).

The rest of the games are

10/23: RSL v Herediano (win and RSL is in. Anything else, Herediano moves on)
10/23: Houston v Olimpia (a 1 goal loss or better and Houston moves on)
10/24: TFC @ Santos Laguna (TFC has to win by > 3 goals. It's basically impossible)
10/24: Seattle v Marathon (Seattle's already clinched)
10/25: LA @ Isidro Metapan (LA's already clinched)

Chivas the Goats? more like the WOAT's, amirite?

currently have the 4th longest goal drought in MLS history apparently (~530 minutes or something), lost their last two games 4-0, and have been outscored 18-1 in their last however many matches. and TFC is apparently a lot worse than them this year? ouch! i guess they have injury problems of their own, and have been on a terrible run since the Agudelo for Pearce trade.

anyway, yeah one of those 4-0 losses was tonight in Vancouver. had some injuries, didn't play all that well, but still destroyed this team with great ease. funny thing is, Dallas are 5 points back, but have a home & home remaining with Chivas, so they need the Goats to maybe get a draw and take some points there because Dallas hold the tiebreak. otherwise, Vancouver have to get something out of their next match at home vs Portland, or in their last match in Salt Lake City. (Dallas' other match is in Seattle, so hopefully the Sounders take all 3 there)

oh and special ouch to GKA or whoever has been pumping Shalrie Joseph's tires forever, as the Caps announcer spent a lot of the game absolutely killing the makeshift center half and his partner for their shoddy play.

tbh i wasn't really trying to hate, just thought it was funny that the announcer spent pretty much the whole game killing him, after he's gotten so much love itt. i know he is/was a really good player.

sign me up!

just caught the last couple minutes, and in an apathetic and mostly empty stadium, DCU stole all 3 points when a shot from distance was spilled by the keeper in the 88th minute or something, and sat there in the 6-yard box for a tap in. 1-0, gg, pretty much exactly what i expected from that game, especially given their attempts to sell it.

poor TFC, i'm actually starting to feel sorry for them. they deserve better at some point.

Excited. If Portland can somehow pull out a win tonight it would just about erase the taste of what has been an otherwise terrible season. I will ignore the fact that they haven't won a road game all year.
