MLB Regular Season Thread 2012 MLB Regular Season Thread 2012

Had a random thought the other day. Not sure if it's been brought up before. I'm sure it has.

Anyways, I believe the reason that MLB never tried to work out an NHL-type arrangement and allow their players to compete in the Olympics is bc they knew the majority of players would fail the IOC drug tests and the sport would have been shamed. Plausible?

i mean arent IOC drug tests a joke anyways?

lol, actually picked it up when I still thought Phils had no shot. Which was as recently as like Monday, but I caved and picked it up Aug 1. I held off this year until after the trade deadline because I thought I could save a couple bucks, but then I wanted to watch Pence fail in San Fran's right field and Victorino do Victorino things late night when I'm awake and the Phillies are all asleep or pounding some Old City strange or whatever.

Okay just saw Machado's play. Completely standard. Hardy being there is even more standard. Honestly even given the fact I knew rmthawk was overstating how great of a play it was, I was expecting something way better than that.

you're talking about the guy who earlier ITT thought that an Oriole hit the first ever broken bat HR

You're wrong.

Nah. I said never seen one like that. Never seen a bat completely snap in half like that fly out. Not worth discussing now, but had to correct you.

I've been trying to be very reasonable the past few days and feel I've done an alright job of it. Homerism aside you've gotta be a fool to find that play anything short of outstanding.

lol at freaking out over that machado play

and here i thought the bad posters thread would help make rmt more self-aware

Also, lol @ Machado taking the pleats out of all of rtm's pants.

go to bed

The dudes on MLB Network seem to agree with me and are giving Machado some pretty high praises for that play. They seem to think it's kind of a big deal.

Don't shoot the messenger.

What part of the play is nonstandard aside from the poor baserunning? Not trolling, serious question.

I see a 3B with no play on the batter attempt to steal an out by faking a throw to first. My conservative estimate is that 80% of 3B from high school up attempt exact same play in that situation. Sure, they don't all sell the fake throw as well, but they try it.

Oh, Harold Reynolds and Mike Lowell were impressed.

Carry on.

I've been here the whole time, brah.

I have fewer than 4000 poasts in more than 5 years. My current posting level is right where it's always been; I really only post prolifically in the yearly playoff threads that involve Philly teams.

Sorry I don't jizz my pants every time Jimmy Rollins makes a slightly above average defensive play or Dom Brown beasts someone with his lazer arm or whatever.

LINDROS bringin it

lolrmthawk and all, but I thought that was a pretty damn impressive play. He had to charge hard and make the clean barehanded grab in the first place, which isn't that easy. For me, what made it really cool was how well he sold it. It wasn't like some lazy fake "uh oh, the ball got past me into centerfield" by a second baseman on a stolen base. He looked like he was going full force to first base. I'd have to see it again, but I think he might've thrown it to third without even knowing if the runner had gone past the bag or not (props to Hardy for being there).

I liked it.

I'll use the following non bias opinion as it sums up everything I was say in response anyway.

I'm sure I'll get laughed out for what I'm about to say, but I really don't care.

To add to what dlks said, it was the whole scenario. 9th inning. Time game. Huge implications. Just the poise and baseball IQ he showed is incredible. It's not like he looked back to 3rd and was like "OH ****. He overran the bag.". He instantly turned to third as if he knew what was happening. He didn't hesitate at all. It truly seemed that he went so hard on selling his fake to first to set that exact situation up.

No doubt it grades high on style points. Also there was most certainly verbal communication to let him know to throw back to third. Every MLB SS is standing on 3B on that play.

yes, they are

you know nothing about baseball if you think other ss are just CHILLIN THE **** OUT on this play and not covering 3rd
09-13-2012 , 12:58 AM
What will he do if machado makes the number 1 play on SC's top 10 of the night instead of only the #4 play?
09-13-2012 , 01:01 AM
Every SS breaks for the ball initially, realizes it's to the third baseman, sees 3B unoccupied, tails the runner, and ends up standing on third.

100% this is how it goes down.
