Well, my understanding of WAR not taking leverage into account at all may have been wrong, but it doesn't seem to resolve the leverage as much as something like WPA.

I guess I should make it clear, I'm not claiming super duper expertise or even that one way is obviously superior. It just seems like to me that WAR underrates certain relievers some, and I'm looking for ways to understand why I'm wrong and/or looking for something a little better.

Absent an actual study, this would have to be the status quo, no? That if Mariano Rivera goes down, Joba Chamberlain takes his place, and every other reliever moves up a rung, and the minor league reliever becomes the mopup guy. The same applies let’s say with NHL defensemen.

Interesting read, seems like it is really hard to quantify. Don't think WPA is a great solution either, as some of the leverage is self-created.

Seems like different stats give you a slightly diff insight.

well he has never in his career been as good as wilson was in 09 and 10 but i'm not sure wilson will ever be that good again either.

otoh the giants do have the best relief pitcher on either team even if bochy is too stupid to use him properly.

what about if there's a hbp and the player has a heart attack and dies halfway up the 1st base line?
you can have someone pinch run in that spot for the injured player
i think it happened with gabe kapler a few years ago when he tore his acl or some**** rounding the bases on a home run
