yankees sign soriano for 3/35 when they already have rivera. plus there's a player opt out clause after the first year. and after the second year. and their first round pick gets shipped to the rays.
Soriano has player options after the first and second years of the deal, according to the source. In the first year, Soriano will receive $10 million and get an additional $1.5 million if he opts out. In the second year, he'll receive $11 million and an additional $1.5 million if he opts out. He'll get $14 million in the third year of his contract.
leaving aside losing a first round pick for this, that would seem to make a kind of sense if soriano was unwilling to sign a one year deal (which he almost certainly was). would've been nice if there could have been a team option after year 2 as well as a player option (dunno if that's possible but i assume it is)
