I just finished my article for THT. About 2,000 words of my own, plus images of the lab in action.

It's less about uncertainty of data (though I mention it enough) and more about data collection in other manners. Colin Wyers has already thoroughly debunked BIS stringer data for pitch location; it's only a matter of time before the UZR stuff is brought to light - if people want to see it.

Fangraphs is nothing more than the new mainstream site to hear people talk about regression "to" the mean (which is a bad phrase for obvious reasons), BABIP stuff, UZR, and blah blah blah.

I have way too much goddamned work (plus a kid on the way) to think about that. I have a pretty limited intelligence, anyway. Colin Wyers is doing one hell of a job on that front; I'll leave it to him. I'll pick up the biomechanics slack.

it's almost as if someone should have said "people should always be questioning" before they disappeared off the baseball blogosphere...

i mean colin wyers usually finishes that sentence with "so use our box score reading defense metric!"

Ya it sounds pretty miserable. If you could live in LA and do it it would be mods tolerable, but you basically need to be occupied from 7pm-1am every night from April-September.

Couldn't they just hire an intern to do a lot of the same stuff for minimum wage instead of setting up this contest?

In the second part, answer one of the following questions (500 word limit)

1. Who will win the American and National League Most Valuable Player Awards in 2011? Make a strong case for your selections.

2. What will be the biggest MLB storyline of 2011? Explain why.
Based on the application qualifications and questions, they're looking for someone to write "casual fan" type articles on broad baseball topics. You probably wouldn't get paid much more than a typical NYC peon and would be heavily censored by MLB in order to meet their "program guidelines regarding all content and topics of discussion." Basically, you'd be MLB.com's social media b***.

You could probably make some good contacts in the MLB offices, which may lead to a low level job in the media afterward, but outside of the handful of events that they may send you to, this sounds like it would be rough if you were leaving a decent full-time job for it.

Mariners blogs are so funny. They say stuff like "Josh Wilson and Brendan Ryan will split time in the middle infield until Ackley is ready." Except... Ackley's MLEs are not good at all. It is not clear that he will be any good at the major league level.

assuming these aren't fans who are hugely up on stuff like MLE, they're just like fans of any sport anywhere.

Keith Law does still have Ackley ranked as the 7th best prospect in baseball, and says he should be ready by mid-2011 (I can copy and paste if needed since I know people hate Insider):

http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/insid...od_mlb_xxx_xxx

I don't know why he kind of handwaves away his slow start but meh.
