We'd absolutely do the same. At the same time, franchises ask fans for--and profit from--an emotional attachment to how the team fares, so when the team fares poorly in a way that can be traced, it's unreasonable to expect fans to not have an emotional reaction to the causal individual. Does that make throwing a bottle an acceptable act? Obviously not; but it makes it an act I can explain.
I interviewed a lot of celebs in my poker media days, and one philosophy I brought away from those conversations was that fame is the price you pay for the money that comes with it. I feel for Howard, but he's learning that. Signing that deal came with a responsibility/expectation to perform. He hasn't. There's a consequence.
