How is that amazing? Could you deal with the pressure of a nation, or an entire continent to make a penalty? In a training session he prolly scores these 10/10. In these high pressure situations it is very common for people to mess up, as I think I would a big percentage of the time.

most guys in Gyan's spot are not thinking about the pressure of an entire continent. They are thinking of pounding that ball to its home and ****ing the prom queen later that night.

he scored pretty coolly just a few minutes later. Maybe not as tense, but still incredibly tense. He's a professional soccer player ffs, and their dedicated pk taker.

It's the right thing to do.
Lol the right thing to do becomes kinda subjective when there is a lot more on the line then your silly 8ball tournament, so dont say this until you have actually been in his situation (which u never will)

wish Gyan had just converted his 85% shot at ending that game.

People suggesting rule changes to give auto-goals for handball off the line situations are forgetting that a peno is pretty certain to be converted, and a red card is extremely harmful to a teams chances unless its in the last few seconds.

As someone said earlier, red card + peno > goal in most cases.

cool, we might as well lock this thread then. No reason for anyone to agree or disagree with Suarez's actions, amirite?

what does the group playing think of the guy acting as "Suarez" in that situation?

strip away all the decorations and get down to what happened

the guy is a douche with poor priorities
No difference than someone who intentionally fouls someone on a breakaway in a pickup game.

Because he got himself together after the first time. Of course every prof player scores these under normal circumstances 99 procent of the time. Under a lot of pressure that percentage goes down for almost any player.

you think there wasn't a lot on the line for me and my team
it's all relative and I'm pretty sure my emotional situation was equivalent

pretty sure that science has shown the human reactions (heart rate, sweat, etc) all match up to being equivalent

meh, I believe the average is 75% actually, even in normal games. But he is there best PK taker so you would have to assume his % is higher than average. At worst, he's probably 70% likely to score there, and well the fact that he didn't is somewhat surprising, no?

Every even somewhat competitive pickup game I've played in (basketball not soccer, but w/e), you get yelled at for NOT fouling in that spot.

I'm convinced you're way off on your pickup game assessment. I play a lot of pickup fb and my reaction would be 'damn well done, hope we score the pk'. I would be surprised if anyone else that plays much fb itt would be upset.

not that a pickup game would last 120 mins, **** that.

Indeed, because as you can see, the two sides are never going to come to an agreement. You think its unethical and you have your reasons, and I have mine for thinking otherwise. Wether these reasons are valid or not remains mostly subjective.

lol @ people wanting a rule change for scenarios that occur with <1% frequency.

Imagine how football refereeing would be if they had specific rules like this for every single eventuality, dependant on game state/importance of match, that can cause "dilemma"

I think it was very poor sportsmanship, and I guess deliberately breaking the rules is a bit unethical. I also fully understand why he did it, and if you were his team mate you would undoubtedly be happy that he did that at that moment. But that doesn't mean as a neutral I am happy to see a team win in that way. This forum has a tendency to herald plays like this, and I understand why. It just goes against a spirit of the game imo. I am trying to find an equivalent comparison, but I am not sure there is one.

Is there a "Spirit of the Game" clause in the rules of soccer?
