It's weird, apparently there was language in Payton's extension that said he would become a free agent if Loomis was suspended or fired. And that's not even why the extension was voided; the NFL didn't like that kind of language in the deal so they voided it.

Jay Glazer is reporting that Payton plans to remain with the Saints regardless. I'd be really surprised if he left before Brees did (and, well, pretty surprised if he stuck around after Brees was gone).

Meh more hedging bull****. He affirmed the players engaged in improper conduct but seemed to feel he couldn't punish specific players. Goodell gets to keep saying he was right and saints fans get to keep saying OJ didn't do it. So dumb.

He confirmed there was wrongdoing, which can mean a simple pay-for-performance pool, which I don't think anyone is really disputing.

Nowhere does he confirm the players had any intent to injure. (Not fully sure of the accuracy to this one, but I haven't found that phrase anywhere, and "bounty" is pretty nonspecific.)

And he specifically blames the coaches, and I seem to remember in the initial investigation, one specific coach was suspended indefinitely and reports came out that he had run bounty pools at previous stops.

To act like this is anything but a decisive victory for the Saints is kidding yourself.

Payton's suspension probably will be upheld. You can't have that **** going on in your own house. (And besides, there seems to be little incentive for him to appeal at this point.) But it's also pretty reasonable to suggest none of this would have happened if Gregg Williams hadn't come to town and brought his pay-for-play program with him.

It shouldn't be forgotten just how difficult it was for the players to get a fair hearing in this. Goodell's initial decision was part kangaroo court and part PR assault. Tagliabue, for example, actually let the accused see the evidence against them and cross-examine witnesses; it's absurd it took so many months of arguing and legal action for something like that to be afforded them.
