when i played LL in so cal in early 90's, you had to play ll. all the best players in my city played ll, there was no other options. well, you could play in smaller cities that weren't ll but they were not as good on the whole.
10-12 was ll, 13 was babe ruth, and there was 14-15 too with some of the best 13 year olds also playing on that to fill rosters.
That said, I now live in Georgia, and this East Cobb baseball thing down the street from me seems to be pretty ****ing serious kids baseball.
USSSA is the king of travel ball. That is where the top teams play. Perfect Game is entering into the youth travel ball mix and will eventually take over the top end travel ball in a few years. Their reputation is just too strong. There are a ton of different orgs. For league there is Dixie, LL, Ripken, Nations, plus others. For travel there is USSSA, PG, NABF, Super Series, and others. The tournament in New York was called the NYBC youth majors and you had to be the champ of one of the organizations to play. That is the top of the top.
East Cobb is some serious stuff, especially from about 14u and up. Players on their top 14u and older teams are D1 or high draft pick players.
Only saw the last couple of innings and the Philly team bitched and moaned about pretty much every called strike, most of which appeared to be close enough to not justify the theatrics. It was hardly Eric Gregg in the '97 NLCS. I assume the final called strike was a spite call by the ump after getting fed up by all the antics. Ridiculous.
Caught a little bit of this on the RV the other day. Frankly, I find it a bit unseemly and I think it sends the wrong message on child labor, especially for an event that features so many developing countries. Would really like to see them transition into just using small adults.
