I like the league system as it does reward the proven best team throughout the entire season. But I'm sure most would agree the players would have preferred to be on the field when they were named champions.
Not taking anything away from what Leicester has achieved, it's been a phenomenal story and I'm sure deep down they really don't mind either way. But being able to hear the roar of the crowd and celebrate instantly with fans would make it just that touch more special I think

It's weird that you have a play off in other sports. Why play for an entire season then have a one off match at the end? A team could be 20 points clear then lose the final despite being the best team in the competition over the course of the season.

There's a place for one off matches. It's called the FA Cup.

It's pretty hard to cap these very unlikely things and the market prices usually reflect things other than the true odds, i.e. how much competition there is on the line, how long they have to get before people are willing to bet it, etc.

Keep in mind the odds were much higher than 5000:1. The bookies just throw a number like that on very unlikely events instead of giving the actual 100000:1 or w/e

I'd like to see the odds when we were a lock to relegated last season.

What do they even do in the remaining matches? Have a keg on the sideline instead of water and give so few ****s that they wind up shipping the league with a negative goal differential?

what evidence is there that the odds were "much higher" than 5000:1?

5000/1 is pretty much the same as 100000/1 in the same way that 1/5000 is pretty much the same as 1/100000

numbers get big quick down at the bottom of the asymptote

The ensuing discussion will be AIDS but I think dkgo is right that the odds were not higher than 5000-1. Like, it's not like Leicester sneaked it in, they are a lock with two games remaining. This was a classic black swan where people were relying on small samples of seasons to make judgements about what is borderline impossible, when even slightly rare events might not have been seen yet.

"True" odds may have been 1000/1 and I'm sure that while 5000 is the number that constantly gets thrown around, bunch of bookies had it at lower (i saw bookies with the 3000/1 number) but WHO CARES

Odds of 5000 is an implied probability of 0.02% people.

I think if you play the season 5000 times every team except Arsenal wins at least once

maybe a good comparison would be an nba team expected to finish with the 4th or 5th worst record in the reg season actually finishing with the best record

so like idk this years denver nuggets finishing with the best record in the nba

Arlo White was on the Dan Patrick show discussing the Foxes. He did a great job putting the season in perspective for the Yanks. He seems like a great guy.

No that wouldn't be anywhere near 5000/1. It would be like a double A baseball team winning the world series within a year or two.

Sums it up.

Pinnacle Sports @PinnacleSports

We didn't even offer odds on Leicester to win the league before the season started it was that preposterous

5000-1 obviously nowhere near true odds and somewhere between 50k-1 to 100k-1 seems about right
