The Bills have extended Evan's contract to a 4 yr./$37 million deal including $18 mil in guarantees...he is now the 3rd highest paid receiver in the league behind Steve Smith and Larry Fitzgerald.

Thoughts?

Very good receiver, but I don't know if he's in the "special" class. That's a lot of dough.

From pro-football prospectus 2008:
Quote:
Think of Evans as the groundhog: if he restructures his deal and stays in Buffalo, sunny fiscal weather is in the forcast
Whether you think Evans is worth this much or not, it clearly signals a shift in how the Bills are approaching things. They've let all of their developed talent walk away up until now, if they're paying top dollar then they obviously feel they can either make a run, sustain things financially or both.

Meh, this will change this offseason(or is it next?) once teams can push the money out into the uncapped years. Once the salary cap is gone WR's prices are some of the first that will jump ridiculous amounts IMO.

Obv Lee Evans isn't the 3rd best reciever in the NFL but I think he's worth paying to hang around... the deal will look good in a year or two anyways.

there's 10 wrs in the league who i'd take over him with those terms. that said, I'm a badger fan so i've always liked evans. Good for him.

Its not just about the cap though (or lack there of), Buffalo doesn't have a bottomless pit of money to spend.

This is always the thing left out when people discuss the uncapped years. Teams still have to have some fiscal responsibilities and there is such thing as a bad contract even if there isn't a cap.

if he had a good QB he could be a solid top 5 WR imo

well, according to the article, he ranks second among AFC receivers in yards and has six catches of 25 yards or longer, tying Green Bay's Greg Jennings for most in the NFL. He only has one TD this year, but I expect he'll get his fair share in the coming months.

meh ive never really paid a ton of attention to him but he always seemed like mainly a deep threat, is he really a go-to true #1 receiver who can catch every ball? (i guess im asking bills fans) his numbers look very ashley lelie-like, but buffalo hasnt had a qb since forever

regardless they prob gave him too much

Is it really hard to spell paid?

I don't think he deserves that kind of cash but it's good to know for Bills fans that they are spending money. If they didn't let players go they could still have Pat Williams, London Fletcher, Clements, Winfield.

the only one of those I'd like to have back is Williams...Winfield is damn good but he wasn't worth what the Niners paid for him. Clements was on the downside of his career when they let him go...same for Fletcher.

He is a true number 1....deep threat and doesn't mind going over the middle, either...Trent Edwards seems to finally be testing his arm deep now, so I expect them to hit Evans more than once a game now. But since the Bills love to have a balanced attack and get their backs involved in the passing game, I don't see him having many 8+ catch games this year unless they get behind.

Clements was 26 when he moved. 9ers did pay a lot for him but the last 2 years are basically never going to happen.

Winfield has been at a very high level while part of the Vikings, he left at age 27 which is near his prime.

Pat Williams is awesome but when he moved he was 32 which is normally not a great age for getting DTs.

Fletcher is probally on the wrong side but has still been great as a Redskin.

lets not forget who his Qb is, and how he has played up until this season. Think if Evans was on a team with a elite QB? Say Romo,Brady, etc. Qb's make the Wr IMO and i think Edwards is clearly getting alot better, the team is getting better. Therefore Evans should move right up the charts. But yeah as of now he is no Moss,Owens, etc.

to some degree yes, but an elite wr doesn't need an exceptional qb to have big numbers-- look at someone like steve smith or andre johnson. evans is definitely one of the better receivers in the league, but i don't think he'll ever be "elite."

I think the Bills have tremendous potential to be a consistent playoff team in the next few years, perhaps even a Super Bowl victory in their future if their talent fleshes out well.
