Nike's goal is to sell their product based on their projected image, and that image is one of their spokespeople being athletes who are in "control"... of their lives, their game, their legacy. They painted Jordan this way his entire career and he became their GOAT cash cow. In the past 12 months their next two biggest lost this control, and Nike has had to work toward reestablishing it as quickly as possible. If Tiger listens to and digests the "advice" from his father, then he is back in "control" of his personal demons and ready to go back out and dominate. If Lebron shows he is aware of the criticisms about his loyalty and legacy but unaffected by (and even dismissive of them), then he is back in "control" and ready to dominate again.

Morality and ethics play no role in Nike's message, it is all about on-field domination. It's the common theme of Nike, and it's served them pretty well. This commercial came from the the marketing braintrust, and I doubt Lebron had anything more to do with this than sign off on it. This is exactly what you'd expect from the company.

Pretty much what I said, except that I think that the fact that he signed off on the spot implies that he thinks of himself more as a brand or meta-basketball entity, rather than a real person.

I think the part about him being the villain and dressed all in black plays on how he thinks racism played a role in people disapproving of him. Could be wrong though.

basically what I got from the commercial is that lebron is gonna do whatever he wants because in the end he has to live with his decision and he is not gonna do what people think he should do.

I liked the LeBron commercial a lot when it first came out, but it definitely feels lame after the SP episode. They should probably just stop running it now.
