no one expected liverpool to get 6th? wat? they were bang on for 6th. not much chance to be ahead of arsenal or tottenham, but hopeful of topping everton. that would be meeting expectations. 7th wouldn't be bad either. anything worse is awful, anything better is good.

No, you could not say this since 1 place below or above 7th could easily/probably be attributed to variance only, making it ridicolous to claim 7th is OK and 8th is awful.

not as much as you think maybe. especially with a perceived gulf in quality existing between them and most of the league. the only other team you can throw in there is newcastle after last year's success. sometimes a fine line is between what is a success/okay/failure. as in our case, where 4th is a great success but 5th will be average to poor and anything worse than that will be very bad. i'm not trying to say that finishing below 7th is impossible or anything, it definitely happens with some frequency, but that part of liverpool's range of possible finishes is definitely on the "bad" side of things. if you want to pretend that liverpool getting 9th is an okay season your by all means welcome to, but don't start throwing stones if we get 5th or 6th since you should find that completely acceptable.
