anyone watch him just fight on cbs, pretty entertaining imo. He won, but it went the full 3 rounds and it looked like he was beat for a while in the 2nd.

The fight before was epic before some chick dr. ruined all our fun.

also, there were 2 chicks wailing on each other, not as hot as you'd think

Also, apparently he is being trained by Bas Rutten, but he didn't look that great on the ground and his conditioning left something to be desired.

Kimbo is a beast, I've seen a few of his fights (mostly on youtube). The one when he gets beat from that sean is nuts.

Yeah Bas Rutten has been training him, he is another beast.

Ya, the chick should have given him the 5 mins he is allowed to recover, instead of asking him right away if he could see out of it and then immediately calling it.

That colossus dude reminds me of sloth from the goonies and it was crazy how his ear was all jacked up looking and then it asploded when kimbo hit him. Gross.

ya, and how casual the announcers were about it. '...and his ear just popped' like they knew it was prolly gonna happen.

Actually, I think Shamrock even said at one point that Slice should go after it.

Thompson is huge but he's an extremely mediocre fighter. Watching those two grapple was painful.

Kimbo is an entertaining fighter and a pretty skilled boxer with crazy power, but that's all he is, a lot more hype than substance. He is several notches below any UFC heavy.

That ear was ****ed up before Kimbo got to it.

Essentially, if any solid MMA heavyweight gets Kimbo to the ground, it's all over. Thompson isn't a solid fighter though.

The fourth fight was a BS stoppage.

Gina Carano is hot.

That is all.

Agreed that he is a notch lower than the UFC guys. Here's the question: will he be able to get to that level?

I highly doubt it. He'll make a nice living fighting, and he might even get to the UFC as a marketing stunt, but if so he'll be out of the UFC as fast as he got there. The guy got schooled by Sean Gannon.

There are at least a thousand grapplers awake right now that Kimbo would have absolutely no chance against, not to even mention that he is only a good, not a great, striker.

The 4th fight was on pace to be one of the better fights of the year until it was stopped. Both fighters were throwing bombs and neither looked like they were getting hurt or tired.

I wasn't surprised when it happened because I could not look away from it whenever it was shown.

Agreed. And the guy that they stopped the fight for was the most pissed of anyone.

Ya, every time they showed him pre-fight, it was always his 'bad side'

I think I agree with this. The fact that Kimbo is 34 hurts his chances of greatly improving. They did mention many times that Kimbo was making 'six figures' for the fight, so that was cool to hear.

To defend Kimbo, he was expecting a pure fist fight against Gannon and never trained to defend against the guillotine.

Kimbo would get thrashed by any good ground fighter, much less an elite ground fighter. As for a striker, I don't know. Cro Cop would brutalize him. But there are few Cro Cops in MMA.

That said, I'm on the west coast and still haven't seen the latest Kimbo fight.

I'm not a huge MMA fan, at least not enough to where I'd want to pay $60 for a PPV event. The 2nd to last fight was pretty damn good before the eye-poke. However, this could be real good for both of them because I feel like there has to be a rematch between those two, and due to their fight tonight it might be the main draw for a future EliteXC card.

Slice just seems like a gimmick and not much more. He obviously has a lot of power and is a good standup fighter, but once he got on the ground, he just seemed completely lost outside of the one reversal he pulled off in the later part of rd 1. The end of Rd. 2 was a pretty pathetic display of Kimbo's ground game, he basically just held on for 45-60 seconds until the round ended. He's going to need to improve his ground skills and conditioning drastically if he wants to be a legit contender.

As a sidenote, how awesome was it that Gus Johnson was calling the action?

Kimbo should have won the fight about 3 or 4 times I thought, but just was too gassed or too inexperienced to finish the guy off.

The announcers were talking about Thompson having a "questionable jaw" before the fight. Then he went and got knocked stupid and just never went down. Kimbo had a weak-ass guillotine in that just showed how awful his ground game is. He's lucky the 2nd round ended when Thompson was just raining elbows on him.

I don't think he'll ever make it to the UFC. I think Kimbo's inexperience got exposed badly tonight, and he should have lost a couple times, but the blood from that ****ed up cauliflower ear sped up the fight stoppage. He needs to step up his ground game, if only in his counters. He doesn't need to be a submission expert, but against anybody conditioned better than Thompson was tonight, Kimbo was getting choked or kimura'd pretty easy.

Quick thought: Am I the only MMA fan who doesn't think that Kimbo is a particularly good guy to put on network TV as the "new superstar of MMA - from YouTube to the cage"? MMA is so popular because its NOT just a bunch of Tank Abbot, bar fight mother ****ers trying to take people's heads off. Not that I don't like Kimbo, or think he's a bad guy, but he's not really "the face" of the sport, and he's going to start getting beaten if he ever has serious competition.

This fight showed he has some MMA skills. He still has a long way to go as he said during the post fight interview. One thing I noticed as well was the way Kimbo came out. He didnt seem to have that killer instinct we all know him for at time tonight and especially at the first of the fight and prefight. He normally cant wait to go at it but seemed like he had something on his mind or what not. Look back at his past fights and watch him come at people and then watch tonights stuff again. Anyone else notice that besides me?

I honestly think that's the exact reason Kimbo will be great for the sport. He can draw in a wider audience than almost anybody else can. If he keeps progressing, he'll draw a bigger audience. Then when he goes for a title fight and gets exposed as the hack that he is by a very skilled fighter, I think that people will see the skill required to win in MMA and gain a respect for it. However, they need somebody like Kimbo who provides an interesting storyline to get drawn to the big fight.

i've learned a little from this thread tonight. not a big fan of this stuff, but watched to see Kimbo ldo. i don't know anything about this, but it was obvious to even me that Kimbo is a horrible ground fighter. There's no way he doesn't find a guy to train with and become at least good, right? also, wtf was up with that ear? seriously, i've never seen anything like that before.

He's been training with Bas Rutten for quite a few months already. He'll never become "at least good". At least by UFC standards.

As for the stoppage, I think it was fair. Thompson was about 4 punches away from being knocked cold.

Kimbo has no chance vs the top UFC guys. Maybe if he was 24, he could train and get there but at 34, not a chance.
