how much did he make this year? doesn't turning down the 17 mean he needs to make significantly more than that per year when he signs a new one now to make up for the diff between the 17 he could have made this year and w/e he actually made this year?

OK, so I may have screwed up there not adjusting for when they signed the contract, but you did the same thing with Rivers. He was absolutely an elite QB when he signed his deal for $15MM per. Was coming off a season where he led the league in ANY/A, DVOA, and QB rating (advancednflstats numbers are down right now so can't check those), and at the time, he'd won 3 of his last 5 playoff games. He was miles ahead of where Flacco is now at that point.

Roethlisberger also signed for $13MM/year in 2008 having played extremely well through 4 seasons with 1 Super Bowl already under his belt and another on the way that very year.

man i've been following and participating in this thread for awhile now but am just now truly appreciating the sheer amazingness of the parlay of this being one of very very few totally low content threads dedicated to a single player sucking (i think theres an "lolromo"?), combined with that player going onto to bink the super bowl MVP the very next year, combined with the whole thing being started by riverman who already has a rep as being the biggest jinxer on 2p2. its surreal.

Putting Flacco below any of Romo, Cutler, Rivers, Shaub, Stafford seems like a bigger stretch than putting him ahead of Ryan or Ben. I'll believe it when I see any of them put two quality playoff games together, let alone four. Is there any precedent for a "borderline top 15" QB having that type of stretch in high-pressure games against premium competition? I think Bayes theorem would indicate that it's far more likely that Flacco has grown into a top 10 QB as a result of his postseason experience and success - a la Eli or Big Ben or, to a lesser extent, Alex Smith - than him being an average QB who is on a massive heater.

Romo and Rivers are still clearly ahead of Flacco, 4 game samples of success notwithstanding. Here's the Top 5 career leaders in ANY/A since the merger:

1. Aaron Rodgers 7.54
2. Peyton Manning 7.11
3. Tom Brady 7.04
4. Tony Romo 7.03
5. Philip Rivers 6.90

Flacco's never even finished in the Top 10 for one season.
