OK, I figured this trade was big enough that it's worth its own thread.

Apparently the deal is Iverson going to Detroit for Billups, McDyess, and Cheikh Samb, who has 7 career NBA Points.

I think it's gonna be interesting to see what happens now with Detroit. Do they make another deal, or go with Stuckey at the point, and have Iverson play the 2 and Rip go to SF? I gotta admit, I kinda like that they're doing something, just because I don't think the same core that they've had for the past 4-5 years can get it done in the playoffs anymore.

I've also heard rumors that the Nuggets are going to waive McDyess and the Pistons are going to get him back after the deal is done, but I'm not sure how valid that is.

NBA thread has been discussing this for like 50 posts already.

Probably not. I don't even think a "NBA closes down shop forever" story would warrant a new thread. They like the NBA threadzilla 'round these parts.

My bad then. Lock it up, I'll look in whatever NBA Megathread is talkin about this.

Nah it's a big deal. Deserves its own thread imo.

Wow this is first I heard about it. Haven't really started paying attention to the NBA yet. It's verrrrrry interesting to say the least. I'm going to have to start watching more regular season.

I think I like it if McDyess comes back to Detroit.

Yeah I just read that McDyess is very against the trade. He says he won't put on a Denver uniform. Some rumors that Denver will buy him out instead.

Under the rules, he'd have to wait a while before being allowed to play for Detroit again. 30 days or something like that.

That's not really a huge deal at this point though. Detroit isn't in danger of missing the playoffs, so as long as he's in the lineup for the 2nd half of the season they should be just fine.

Can't disagree with this.

My heart is with you, but this is clearly a thread-worthy topic.

As a Denver fan I'm much more excited to have a top tier PG than AI.

Even with my mild dislike for Billups.

Also, ya, McDyess apparently won't play here.. so Denver probably will buy him out.

This is good news for me as it means more shots for JR Smith, and probably better ones.

The more I think about it the more excited I am. We had a lot of talent but no "team" at all. It was a bunch of talented players trying to create their own shots and everyone standing around and watching. No guarantee Billups can make these guys play more as a team but with someone that can actually create it could turn out really good.

I'm just kind of pissed, as a Sixers fan, that Philly couldn't pull off a Iverson for Billups trade when they traded him to Denver. Wasn't this type of deal rumored back then?

no way Detroit does the deal back then.

Clear win for DEN imo. JR Smith + Melo obviates the need for Iverson, their biggest hole is/was at PG, Billups one of the top PGs in the league and he's in his prime. Detroit...not sure what they're thinking tbh. Dump the glue of a championship-level team (Billups) to get a jackaholic combo guard? Plus Sheed+Iverson can't be a good idea, can it?

I'm pretty sure this makes DET worse now and, assuming Iverson walks, later. Billups (at $12M/year for this year and two more) has a market-value contract...certainly far better than Iverson ($22M this season, then FA).

I really think people are overstating how good Detroit was going to be this year. Basically, Dumars needed to be sure of two things:

1. The team, as composed, was not going to be a serious title contender.
2. Rodney Stuckey is close to being a very good player.

If he was sure of those two things, he doesn't lose a whole lot this year considering they'll still make the playoffs (but not win) and gives him a lot of cap room in the near future. If he was unsure of either of the above and did this as a reactionary deal to get immediately better, then, yes, I think it was bad.

Plus, Sheed and AI on the same team is hilarious.

I don't know about this, the Pistons are looking at 25 - 30 million in guaranteed contracts for the 2009-2010 season with Rip, Tayshaun and Stuckey (and a few others) on the books. With a lot of teams looking to shed salary 40 mil in cap space is a valuable asset as the Camby trade showed over the summer, and the Pistons could take on any two players contracts with that much cap space. How many picks and players could they get to take the last 20 million of shaqs contract off of Phoenix's hands, or Dampiers last two years or J'Oneals 23 million dollar player option?

Also if by some miracle this team is magic and dominates, Stern handing over a trophy to Sheed and AI would just look so hilarious.

Long excerpt, but still:

Quote:
The Pistons add up-tempo Iverson -- in a contract year -- when he will be eager to prove that it was no fluke he made it to the Finals in 2001. That's just an hors d'oeuvre.

Down, the road the Pistons becomes the driving force of big-time free agency as soon as Iverson's contract comes off the books next summer. The Pistons will combine a winning environment, one of the most respected general managers in the game, and -- depending on salary cap levels that are yet to be set, and extensions that may yet be given to existing Pistons -- likely enough cap space to sign two free agent players to max contracts over the next summers of 2009 and 2010.

Feast your eyes on this list of players who will be available. 2010 free agents include LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire, Ray Allen, Tyson Chandler, Manu Ginobili, Richard Jefferson, Joe Johnson, Tracy McGrady, Yao Ming, Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Redd.

The two that jump out to me are, of course, Chris Bosh and LeBron James. They played together nicely on Team USA, and now Dumars can at least entertain the notion of signing not one of those two, but both.

A team that suspects one of those players might leave via free agency in 2010 might be compelled to realize some value for the player by dealing with a team under the cap like the Pistons in the summer of 2009. (The NBA's rules about matching up salaries in trades only apply to teams that are over the salary cap. Once Iverson's big contract is off the books next summer, the Pistons will be able to deal freely.)

Today Joe Dumars has parlayed a 32-year-old point guard into a rental of Allen Iverson, and the bedrock players of the Pistons' long-term future.

While there is significant risk -- the Pistons with Billups were contenders this year, and they make take a step back -- this may well come to be seen as the greatest move yet from one of the NBA's sharpest general managers.
