That Webber was able to continue after that, is testament to "Red Bull Gives You Winning Front Suspension!"

it's funny... they demand freedom, yet they attack one of the most iconic symbols of freedom, a Formula 1 race.

It depends who benefits from the race. If the race basically is paid for by people who are stealing from them, F1 is a symbol of slavery and not freedom.

are you referring to public funding fr sports venues?

you may have an argument, but it's not the FIA fault there. these are privately held complexes.

Sure it is their fault. It's not just public funding of them, it's the absolutely horrible human rights violations those governments have in order to fund them.

And it will benefit those who exploit those violations the most.

This is the biggest event in the nation, of course using it to bring attention to horrible things is a good thing for them, they don't even have to be "taking it out on F1".

be nice if you had proof that this wasn't privately funded instead of simply spouting "we are the 99%" BS.

I have a feeling Hamilton will continue to claim the Mercedes and RB are quicker. The subtle implication being that it was his otherwordly talent that got McLaren the pole when he gets on pole.

[ ] F1 racing is an iconic symbol of freedom.

It's an iconic symbol of glamour, speed, technology, and cool, but no, not an iconic symbol of freedom. Certainly not as long as there's been a GP of China.

Admittedly, I used to be an Ecclestone hater a few years ago but yeah he's pretty awesome.

If they go through with this they will be associated with supporting violent repression and denial of people's human rights.

I am with you on that. But don't isolate an F1 event. We can go further than that and blame their government cos that **** the people are protesting about has been going on for a long time and the people are sick about it.

I think pushing the Bahrain F1 GP to happen is good so CNN, BBC, etc. will be there then the world can actually see, be reminded and be aware of what's going on in those parts. I haven't been reading/watching and caring about the news lately and now cos of Bahrain GP I am reminded of all the crap that has been going on. Crap I wanted to avoid reading...

So yeah, go ahead Bahrain Govt., have an F1 event. You are ****ing yourselves in doing so. All eyes are on you this Sunday. There will be a handful of journalists wanting a good story while the race is happening.

I'm not saying it's publicly funded in this case, it's funded (most likely) by other people who exploit the rest of the people in the country.

I'm looking forward to the race. Hope the mercedes remains as competitive as it was in Shanghai.
Ok, so let's do a race in Teheran or Pyongyang then. But that's not my basic point, neither is the question if safety can be guaranteed.
F1 is racing in a country that is shaken by the Arab Spring, although the Bahrain protests weren't covered that much by western media like what happened in Egypt or Tunisia for example. Last year Saudi Arabian military had to assist to crack down the protests, which have been continuing in smaller scale untill now. You have a very tense climate in Bahrain, which is different than in China for example.
I wouldn't think that a country that is in a revolutionary state is the right place to go for F1.
Furthermore, directly supporting an autocratic regime which surpresses it's people and at the same time uses F1 as a symbol of national glory, unity and harmony will make things worse. You can't avoid that protesters are directing their focus on F1, because it's their best way to get public attention. So the GP is becoming political, if you want it or not.
Unfortunately there seems to be one dead protester by now, and you allready see what is arising thereby: Media is full with F1, but not because of good racing, but because of violence.

So, quiet frankly, all the talking about "F1 is unpolitical" and "we are only here to race" is a giant load of BS.

If something good could get of this GP, it might be this...

The opposition to the F1 race is amusing. It's like people need the F1 circus to become aware of that fact that, actually, there are some places in the world that aren't so nice. Who woulda thunk it.
