And in this Pistons fan's opinion it's about damn time. I just don't think Flip has what it takes to get it done in the playoffs. And now that we got rid of Flip Murray in February, we can't claim to have two people in the organization named Flip, so Saunders is useless to us at this point.

The name brought up in the article that I really like is Avery Johnson. He's a good coach who I don't really think got a fair shake in Dallas and would do a great job with Detroit who are still title-ready for the next couple of years.

I love the "grass is always greener" mentality that pervades discussions like this. Our coach SUCKS but some other (fired) coach wasn't given a chance!

OP, this isn't directed at you per se but in general. But there are plenty of Dallas homers who are really happy to see AJ dismissed, and their arguments make sense from what I've seen/heard.

Detroit and Dallas trade recently-playoff-challenged coaches and both cities erupt with boundless optimism for the future.

Only 30 postseason wins in 3 years? What a schmuck.

generally think Flip is a good coach, though flawed, and takes more heat than he should. First he had to deal with Ben Wallace, who at this point is a bonafide coach killer, then this year had an injured Chauncey and Sheed was absolutely mailing it in for one reason or another.

Maybe his problem is as a motivator? Or maybe it's just the guys. They didn't play balls out for Larry after they got the ring, either. Cost 'em home court. Frankly I think they were a better team in Flip's first year.

Bleh, kind of mixed on this. You need to have a replacement in mind when you do something like this, and if it's Avery I'm going to shoot things with the gun I will be forced to buy should that happen.

I wonder if Cuban is thinking he should have waited (to hire) and had a chance to interview Saunders. Early stories were saying that if Detroit was bounced early and Saunders was gone that he would have been on the top of the list.

ETA: Just read the story. I think Curry will be a done deal as long as he wants it (and why wouldn't he?) Should be interesting to see how well he does.

Flip lost how many straight first round series in Minnesota? Yet he was portrayed as something great when he was coming into Detroit. The fact is he was never that successful. There's no excuse for this Detroit team not to have made the NBA Finals in one of his three years. These guys played for Carlisle, they played for Larry Brown, they don't have the same motivation to play for Flip. Why, I couldn't tell you. But, it's just a fact. Avery Johnson would be a huge upgrade.

I've always felt that Saunders was a decent coach. He certainly had the talent, but couldn't really get it done. I think it's right that his tenure with the Pistons is over, but I'm sure he'll do well elsewhere.

Meh I don't think this is a great or bad decision. TBH I doubt it matters at all.

Well, according to the ESPN Ticker, Pistons Assistant Michael Curry is going to be named the new head coach according to Stephen A. Smith.

He's never had a head coaching job and has only been an assistant I believe for 2-3 years. I wonder if this could be part of a large rebuilding process and a sign that they might be getting rid of some of their core players (Sheed most likely, possibly McDyess or Tayshaun) and rebuilding around younger talent like Stuckey and Amir Johnson.

Who wants Rasheed? He's old, apparently no longer wants to play in the post, and is a below average shooter. He's pretty much an expiring contract at this point.

Hes a little more than just an expiring contract, lets be real he is still a good defender and at times a great offensive player

Yeah, but for how long? He's 33. I'll agree that I was being a little rash. I wouldn't mind him on the Celtics if he agreed to backup KG and Perk.

figured a team that is close but not there yet would want him rather than an established team (boston), maybe he will go back to atlanta

In terms of talent? Yeah obviously. If you can get Sheed to play great post defense, work entirely out of the post offensively, and not sulk, then I prefer him over Perk. But that's a lot of if'fing. Also, don't wanna stagnate Perk's development as a player. But backing up Perk and KG he'd get like 30 mpg anyways, and he'd have to be favorite for 6th man of the year along with Manu.

Edit- all hypothetical anyways since we don't have the contracts to trade for him anyways

If you are rebuilding around young Talent I can't imagine getting rid of Tayshaun would be in your plans, hes their youngest starter and at 27 has plenty of good years left. Rip is 29, Billups 31, Mcdyss and Wallace are 33, so if you are on a youth movement I could see trading one of them.

I don't know, I think Tayshaun is the most likely starter to get moved after Dyess and Sheed, it's probably close with Rip. Chauncey isn't going anywhere imo. The Pistons do have a lot of young talent, and could acquire more, but I think they're probably gonna take 1 or 2 more runs at a title in these next couple years.

I've heard rumblings about shipping Rip. His value probably won't ever be higher. I dunno. Team is in a tough spot. Going to the ECF every year is a lot of mullah

Got to be Curry. The Pistons have like totally stonewalled the Bulls from interviewing him.
