110,000 people (even the lololds/blue hairs) at michigan stadium gets pretty damn loud, but in bursts..

would love to be at a raucous soccer match, I assume I'd fit right in

But hey, if a game at the Maracana with 95% Chileans beating up on Spain to knock them out of the World Cup and to advance out of group play and screaming/singing/cheering the whole time isn't a good atmosphere, then I guess you've got me. But far more likely that you're frankly delusional and talking out of your ass.

I know this will hurt the feelings of many, but the loudest match I've been to by far was an American college football game.
Not clear it was really 95% Chileans. I think it was more a split crowd.

You understand I was in the stadium, correct?

Every play at Knoxville for the game I am talking about was as loud as if it were the last play of the game. Was insane. Could barely hear even during commercial breaks.

Look dude, it's fair that you can only base your opinion on what you have experienced, but matter of fact is the World Cup(and all other national team matches) is pretty tame atmosphere-wise. The craziness and intensity of club derbies is just at a completely different level.

It was super surprising to me how small most soccer stadiums are compared to college football stadiums, I had always just assumed they would be completely massive for some reason.

And a lot of the Chileans were probably rooting for Spain too, them having won the world cup and EC and all. Probably like 50/50, yeah.

we have club derbies in the US too, we just call them "rivalries"

(I've been to Arsenal / Tottenham myself)

Well in Europe those "rivalries" lead to riot like scenes.

ROME (AP) -- Germany midfielder Christoph Kramer was disoriented and confused after taking a heavy blow to the head early in the World Cup final, according to the match's referee.

''Shortly after the blow, Kramer came to me asking 'Ref, is this the final?''' Nicola Rizzoli told the Gazzetta dello Sport on Thursday. ''I thought he was joking and made him repeat the question and then he said, 'I need to know if this is really the final.' When I said, 'Yes,' he concluded, 'Thanks, it was important to know that.'''

Rizzoli said he let Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger know about the exchange during Sunday's game but Kramer continued playing for 14 minutes following the collision with Argentina defender Ezequiel Garay.

That's ridiculous. Like, anyone rioting over a sporting event should be ridiculed.

Just saying, the rivalry in euope is of another quality. Ultra groups beat each other up before and after games.

Thats the sad part about it. Pretty much all european countries experience it but countries like Poland, Czech Republic, Russia and Ukraine are by far the worst. Youtube Ostrava fans if you want to see some serious rioting.

I was there for the homecoming game in 2010 and I can't say it sounded particularly loud. Certainly nothing like CL at Celtic park or Newcastle-Sunderland.

Pretty awesome experience though

examples like this and riots etc are discussing "fandom" on an entirely different spectrum than the earlier conversations.

if it's of a different "quality" it's a much, much lower one. people primarily interested in rioting and fighting are pretty different from people primarily interested in cheering.

It's not ultra groups who are beating up on each other. It's groups of lowlife pieces of **** that are doing that.

You can say what you will about ultras, and I myself am not 100% behind everything they are doing/standing for, but it really grinds my gears when ultras just categorically get lumped into the same bucket as the subhuman trash that are hooligans.

For most people watching football is a hobby. For ultras it's a way of life.

Ultras liberi!

That's extremely simplistic. Nothing is that black and white.

Might as well chime in on the best atmosphere, I was at a Malawi v DRC African nations cup qualifier that was absolutely bat****. Ramshackle old stadium, witch doctors casting spells, running on the pitch and cursing the goal line, fans making slit throat gestures at each other. I reckon there would have been 5 red cards in a European match, think there was 1 booking. Lomana Lua Lua scored a screamer before Malawi came back to win 2-1. Nuts
