More relevantly, up until now, this coach has basically never shown the ability to be tactically flexible. So switching things up in the GOAT WWC match (according to 538 based on average WSPI) is gutsy. 4-4-2 has clearly been plodding and static, this actually opens up their ability to be more aggressive re: pressing and non-direct attacking, whether it's 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 (as Julie Foudy thinks it will be).

Gonna give Ellis credit for playing the long con and knowing all along this was the plan. Played 4-4-2 all tourney knowing they'd keep winning anyways. She obviously wanted to prevent any scouting by Germany.

USA lineup is pretty close to optimal. If USA lose, it won't be because we had a dumb coach. Brian playing, 5 in MF, Wambach sitting and probably a late sub. That's basically everything the commentariat have been asking for.

Man, this really is a great game. as someone else already mentioned (per538), this is the highest ranked matchup of all time in the WWC. Really hoping USA wins obv, but the game should be awesome either way.
