You can expect at least one striker to get injured. The point of having a large squad is to have cover in all positions and good managers like Fergie always have more striking options on the bench. It is stupid not to have the extra forwards for the sake of the extra defender and midfielder who are very very unlikely to get a game. So what happens now if Carroll or Welbeck injure themselves in training ? We will be stuffed before the competition has even started !

Play Walcott up front or something.

Or even play Gerrard as a #9. He's always a goal threat, and it eliminates the likelihood of seeing any of his Hollywood passes.

Although that would mean Henderson in midfield.

You're stuffed anyway with Carroll. Downing as 'false 9'.

can you back up the claims of expecting at least one striker to get injured? I'd guess its a 10% chance of either getting injured in the first two matches, and by then Rooney will be back for our consolation match.

Also Carroll is highly unlikely to get injured because:

a) he doesn't run fast enough to pull a hamstring
b) he doesn't turn fast enough to twist an ankle. He prefers to glide around in a circle the way a kestrel circles a field mouse
c) no defender will slide in to tackle him because they know if he gets the ball, it will make its way to the opposition within 5 seconds.

You have to realize what an unusual situation this is.

99.99% of the time you go into the first game with 3 strikers while likely playing one of them, so you have 2 on the bench. Even if one of them gets injured between game 1 and 2 you enter the 2nd game with one striker starting and one on the bench. Then Rooney comes in and you are back up to 3.

Germany only has 2 nominal strikers...surely Löw must be insane?

But Germany have probably some other guys who are capable of putting the ball in the net. Who have England got?

We won't need ANY strikers if we pass the ball around for 5 minutes until Kroos shoots.

By the way, who will be the #1 keeper for Greece? Chalkias and Sirakis(?) were the ones in the last two test matches.

Having Götze as a forward is pretty bad. Schürrle, Podolski and Müller will play on the wings but could be pushed up top in case of emergency. Reus will probably be our emergency striker though.

Neuer - Boateng, Mertesacker, Badstuber, Lahm - Khedira, Schweinsteiger - T. Müller, Özil, Podolski - Klose

Lahm has been confirmed to play on the left.

Joris Mathijsen is out for the first game, and likely for the second as well.

Which means we have to start Ron Vlaar, which is extremely lol. We will also start Jetro Willems at left back. Hugely talented but only 18 years old and has zero experience.
Affelay will start at left wing who has been injured all year and pretty much the same can be said about Sneijder.

Things looking good!
