I guess Man Utd realized they owe him the money after the court cleared him and figured they'd taste the public temperature by implying they'd take him back while being vague enough to be flexible about it.

I guess that beats standing up against his behavior firmly and having to deal with little-leverage negotiation when you did not even try to keep him
