I dont remember Bayern dropping these bantz last year. Uli throwing haymakers (from the Athletic article)

Quote:
The irony is not lost on City, who consulted lawyers last season when the then president, Uli Hoeness, was quoted saying that Sheikh Mansour paid for signings by ramping up the price of oil.

An interesting look at that question from Statsbomb

https://statsbomb.com/2020/02/being-...ood-liverpool/

The findings being that :

Noone can score against Liverpool from range (1 goal from >21 yards and that was the free kick after Alisson was sent off)

Noone can can hit the target against them from the left side of the box

They are very good at set pieces offensively

They overachieve with reference to xG offensively almost entirely when they are level in games , and overachieve defensively with reference to it when ahead.

Team combines easy to save chances with a great goalkeeper

A few LlorisGOAT articles doing the rounds right now - Gazzaniga did okay, but we look a lot better with Lloris.

How does the new handball rule work?

A free kick or penalty WILL be awarded if:

the ball goes into the goal after touching an attacker's*hand or arm.

a player wins ball possession after it comes off their hand or arm*and then scores, or creates a goalscoring chance.

the ball touches a player's hand/arm which has made their silhouette unnaturally bigger.

the ball touches a player's hand/arm when it's raised above their shoulder.

There WILL BE NO penalty if:

the ball touches a player's hand/arm immediately from their own head/body/foot or the head/body/foot of another player.

the ball touches a player's hand/arm close to their body and has not made their silhouette unnaturally bigger.

a player is falling and the ball touches their hand/arm when it is between their body and the ground*(but not extended to make the body bigger).

additionally, should the goalkeeper attempt*to clear a ball from a teammate but*fails, the goalkeeper is allowed to handle the ball.
All those words are how they're defining 'deliberate' and none of them apply to the incident yesterday.

The bolded above is actually incorrect. If the defender's arm is in an unnatural position then they are obliged to get out of the way.

I think the word "deliberate" is a bit of a red herring here. It's about as vague as the NFL's "football move" when establishing whether a catch has been made. There's a long debate in philosophy as to what actually constitutes "intentionality" and whether that's the same as being deliberate and expecting refs to be able to make those kind of calls in real time is unrealistic. The annoying thing with VAR is that the technology isn't the problem, as most people are suggesting. It's that we've not previously had a meaningful debate about what these terms actually mean and how a ref can be expected to operationalise them.

That being said, it seems really clear to me that it's not a penalty. The defender was in the process of moving his arms behind his back, i.e. clearly making an effort to make his body smaller to not gain an advantage.

Fair enough, agreed but I was making an assumption that the arms aren't in an unnatural position to start with. I think it's fair to say that if they're in an unnatural position then the defender has already moved them to deliberately block the ball.

They're under no obligation to put their arms behind their back, which is why the "natural silhouette" part of the guidance was introduced.

Lloris (C), Aurier, Alderweireld, Sanchez, Davies, Dier, Winks, Dele, Bergwijn, Son, Lucas.

jfc why would you bench both glc and ndombs for dier? at least we have a natural left-back again

Yea this is how I saw it. Was surprised at the talk of a penalty after seeing it. Pretty clear non pen for me.

I was a bit surprised our goal stood although it probably wasnt enough for a var overturn. I wonder if the ref let it run because of var, feel sure he would have normally blown.

We’ve been way better since about 5m before we scored, worryingly dire before that.

Aurier Lucas Dier (especially Serge and Dier) all having massive shockers.
