Hightower and Zach Brown were two of my three linebackers I wanted with this pick so I'd better lock up Joe Mays now

I like that team a lot...stealing Cameron Wakes helps a bunch. WR corp is awesome. But you def have two free safeties; both would struggle at SS.

IIRC both Rhodes and Collins have often been used in schemes where the free/strong safety role isn't clearly defined, and that's my fall back plan.

Eh, I mean you don't have to have one. But when both of your safeties have struggled in run support and aren't real good hitters, it limits some your flexibility on defense.

I think Rhodes gets an unjustifiably bad rap a bit on this as he usually seems to rate among the best Safeties on fewest missed tackles. I'll admit, however, when looking at Safeties I definitely was thinking about stopping the pass first.

brief writeups on everyone i've drafted since we went to the pick-a-day format

Lance Moore is still only 28 and an excellent slot receiver. Very precise route runner, solid hands, really good at sneaking into tight spaces. Will give our QBs a reliable slot / short-medium target in the passing game.

Devon Still was just too talented to pass up. At 6'5", 310, he'll most likely play DT in a 4-3 for us, but he could move around based on whatever he's good at. Long-term future is likely starting next to Atkins to provide a crazy strong interior pass rush. Gives us a guy to rotate in anywhere along the line to keep everyone fresh.

Louis Vasquez was a 2009 3rd-round pick for San Diego and has started at guard ever since. One of the better young guards in the league; he's great value here and will provide some good experienced play on our O-line without being too old to fit in as the rest of the line matures. PFF's top guard in the AFC West last season.

Coby Fleener is one of the top TE prospects in this year's draft. He's a versatile, all-around tight end; an excellent receiver and a fine blocker. I plan to use him and Jermichael Finley in a Gronkowski / Hernandez-style pairing to create mismatches in the passing game.

I already wrote about Carson Palmer.

Rueben Randle didn't put up huge numbers at LSU, but he was also dealing with by far the worst QB play of any national contender. He has size (6'3" - 6'4") and excellent hands and uses his body well to get the ball. He's not likely to be a Larry or Andre, but I think he has a good chance of becoming a Marques Colston type.

Rolando McClain has a certain legal unpleasantness to deal with, but he rated high in ANS' ratings, he's still very young (two years' NFL experience and he's only 22!), and, well, hopefully he can play MLB real good for us.

I talked about David Wilson earlier today.

And Joe Mays made PFF's all-AFC West team at OLB, no mean feat considering the talent at that position in the division. "[H]e continues to build a reputation as one of the best two-down linebackers in the league, bringing great intensity and physicality as a downhill linebacker."

I owe 3 picks it seems:

LG Brian Waters

RG Phil Loadholt

CB Mike Jenkins

Waters has still been amazing in pass protection, he should help ease Veldheer on the left side in his transition to becoming a well above average LT. Loadholt has been a poor pass protecting RT that is a beast in the running game at 6'8'' 343. I'll plug him in at RG where he should be at least pretty solid

Searched the spreadsheet and couldnt find Jenkins, who is a steal imo if he hasnt been taken. After a great rookie year he was terrible in coverage last year, although he may have just tanked. This past year he was much improved under Ryan although he was battling through injuries the entire season. He has been a very solid tackler and run supporter all 3 years

I'll do a full team writeup today or tomorrow
