lol this is why i think england are better than SA in test cricket. SA are just too flaky. Aus today had a 18 year old rookier debutant, a erratic quick with no confidence, petter siddle, a relative rookie spinner, and a allrounder who broked down and couldn't bowl. and yet south africa have just self combusted- they should be 350-3 at the close

in reality with steyn, morkel, de villiers and kallis SA should be the best test team but they just underperform as a team and are mentally susceptible.

good 2 c cummins making his debut and it looks like he belongs there

I go away for a few minutes and from looking like they will easily get past 400 SA now look like they will struggle to get 300. The game changes quickly.

South Africa have more star power but England get more consistent performances out of all their players. I think the key distinguishing feature though is how well Englands tail enders bat - very underrated aspect of test cricket imo. I would back them to beat SA in a series home or away atm.

Obviously though if it were a test series of South African born players v. players who were actually born in England then SA romp it in

Damn I thought Watson was out with a back injury...Aus should come out of today with the lead for sure but they can't count on their second innings score to carry them anymore, so they'd better get a 100+ lead today

A few tweets-

Funny ol world, one day 21/9, another day 21 without loss....

Rather than putting a deep point out, how about not feeding Hughes with short wide filth?

Saffers dont seem to have a game plan this morning - just rocked up expecting it to happen!

One thing going for SA, we have seen one wicket get 10 for Australia frequently over last couple of years"

Last tweet perhaps the most important.

ok so i'll admit I don't know a ton about cricket but is watson not the best opener in the game? in all formats?

That's a stretch to say that.

I will say he's comfortably the best opening all rounder in the world atm. (Also only opening all rounder I can think of )

Talking of all rounders- I never understood why a keeper was designated as an all rounder.

Current best openers imo:
Test: Cook
ODI: meh can't decide but wouldn't say Watson
2020: Gayle

Edit-

Aus 150/0 and this is looking very easy

Probably not the best in any format, but is close imo, however if you were to pick one guy to open tests, odi and 20/20 he would be your man; also taking into account that he bowls good. He is probably our only world class player aat the minute so maybe I am overrating him a bit.

Watson gets out between 50-100 way to much though to be considered the best opener in the world espcially when you compared him to someone like Cook who when he gets past 50 normally makes something pretty big (even though I think he's useless )

watson doesn't score enough in tests to be anywhere near the best opener in tests. but there aren't many players who open and score runs in all formats like him. dilshan(watto is prob better in every format)/sehwag(doesnt play 2020)/g smith(crap for some time in odi and now retired from t20 i think).

no doubt about it though watson has a pretty sick record in odi cricket.4186 runs @ 43.15 @ sr 89.84 and 138 wickets @ 29.55 @ 4.85 econ is pretty elite

south africa are taking a pasting here. my boy phil hughes coming good

compare watto to kallis in odi cricket.

kallis 11372 @ 45.48 @ 72.88; 267 @31.76 @ 4.81
watson 4186 @ 43.15 @ 89.84; 138 @29.55 @4.85

very similar except watson scores his runs a lot quicker which is obviously very important.

obviously watson has a long way to go to match the duration and sustain his batting and bowling over a long career.

Ok so now Watson is just a tick over thirty years old. Is there any reasonable hope that he could get measurably better at the test format? Any chance he ends up with 5000+ test runs? As far as ODI goes i don't think anyone other than Sehwag can claim to be as good as Watson at this time. T20 is obviously only about the $$$$$ so lol Gayle and lol windies.
Obviously there are concerns about Watson's health at pretty much any given time...and this completely disregards his worth as a bowler. Just throwing it out there

yes i think watson will get better in tests. he still has 5 or so really quality years left and he surely will learn to turn his fifties into big hundreds - especially as he bowls less. watson is easily better than sehwag(plays like a ******) in ODI cricket- but sehwag is lightyears ahead in terms of test cricket and always will be.

you would think sehwag would get better the shorter the period of the game but in reality it's the opposite. he just doesn't seem to value his wicket at all in ODI and T20.

does anyone think that sehwag deserves to go down in test cricket as a greater player than sachin?

Nah he is probably the best test opener though in the last 15 years though. Hayden would be a close second but cant compete with Sehwags sick sr.
Michael Slater was a really quick test scorer who was appalling at odi, I think these guys get a bit ahead of themselves and want to put every ball of the fence in limited overs.

I think Watson will only start making more runs if he quits bowling, theres a pretty big push to get him to bat at 5 or 6 so he can keep on bowling. Realistically though the guy is massive cripple and is due for another serious injusry I'd say its pretty unlikely he would play into his mid 30's, especially with IPL in the equation.
