No. Boxing gloves don't allow you to grip people. You tie them up by clinching and twisting your arms in between the other boxers, forcing the ref to disentangle the two. Also, you can't throw effective punches from that position and distance. In MMA you can use an elbow or grab the other fighters wrist to keep their hand away why you pound on them, or choke them. You can't do that in boxing. When you wrap another boxer up he really can't do anything. That's why when boxers get hurt they either run away, cover up, or hold on to you like a desperate man on a stripper in the VIP room.
Changing that distance means everything. It buys you time, it gives you a few seconds to catch your breath and get your legs back and forces the other fighter to reset to attack.
