here's the thing, Sirk sucks and I was hoping he would lose his job so this is fine with me. Boehme is better and then we have the #11 QB recruit coming in next year. Would be nice to redshirt him one year then get 4 years out of him.

I'll share a candid thought I am having this season, for the first time ever. Is anyone else sort of feeling the moral tug that maybe with the science that we have right now, that just maybe watching football isn't something we should be doing? Just because of how concrete the science is now about the damage being done to these kids brains?

I would feel better if somehow they all had to sign a waiver acknowledging that playing is very likely to destroy their mental well being, their life. Like as long as they're ok with that I have to be ok with it, it's their life.

Maybe I'll snap out of it when the season starts, and getting completely hyped again. But this is the first time I've actively debating with myself about my moral obligation to this topic. Gonna post this in the college football thread too. Very interested to hear responses..

Vandy's starting QB going into last season quit in the Spring due to repeated concussions. He's now in med school. Even though it hurt the team, I was pretty happy with his decision. Very little upside for him personally; lots of downside.

I think the risk is known at this point (not fully, but everyone should be aware.) There are numerous occupations that are dangerous or hazardous to health. The trade off is almost always money. That's the only real issue is that some of these kids aren't going to get any money for playing.

Your moral obligation should be about how corrupt the NCAA is, and that watching college football is just supporting them. I wish more people were like me and barely watched college football cause lol college football, but at least there is some progress towards actually compensating these athletes properly.

I'll continue watching college football and be fine with it. The players are well aware of the risks

I don't know. I certainly don't think every player is aware of the risks, let alone well aware. I'm sure they have at least heard the term CTE thrown about, but as far as someone sitting them down and explaining to the best of our ability what is likely to happen to their brains, I say no way that's happening.

Wager more and you'll feel less conflicted about this.

Teenage boys almost universally think they're immortal and that nothing bad will happen to them. That makes them excellent cannon fodder in wartime and explains a lot of the truly idiotic behavior we see in college athletes.

You can explain the risks all you want, but don't believe for a minute that these kids really "understand" what they're subjecting themselves to and what that means for their future.

In theory schools should be looking out for their students' well being; not subjecting them to life altering risk.

Coaches can be ejected from the game this year as part of some new rules.

I predict either Muschamp or Harbaugh will be the first to get ejected after throwing some hissy fits.

Getting ejected at the tail end of some sorry ass 6-10 loss to Vandy would be a truly epic beginning to the Muschamp Era.

Im not going to buy "they're young and stupid and therefore dont understand the implications"

They can live in denial and say that's not going to happen to me, but that is not for a lack of understanding or not being informed of the risks.

Knowing everything I know about concussions now, If I magically went back in time 20 years and turned into a great athlete I would snap play Div 1 football.

I kinda think the pendulum has gone a little too far and we are actually starting to oversell the risks (relative to the rewards) of playing football as a youth through college.

Nah it's actually worse than we think. Those non-concussive hits add up. But the correct answer is still this:

More like looking for the next Jesse Williams. I think recruiting more from here can happen. The only obstacle in that in pro sports here, players routinely make their debuts at like 19. They'd need to get people in high school and seduce them with tales of getting laid constantly.

I think the main reason Cal/Hawaii played here was "money" though.

The rugby and AFL themed TD celebrations were fun.

Jesse Williams is probably a good example actually because there isn't really any place in pro sports here for guys whose main assets are bulk/strength or explosiveness. Even at the power positions in rugby or rugby league you still need to be able to run a whole game. The point with Hayne was that punt returner or running back match up well with skillsets in Australian sports, but better for recruitment would be to recruit positions that don't have an equivalent here, like OLs/DLs and maybe strongside linebackers.

Seems like runningbacks who could punt and kick figgies could come in pretty handy.

Anyone see any lines they really like week 1? Just put a few units on UGA -2.5 and USCe + 3.5. Feel pretty good about those. Haven't really seen any others that really catch my eye. A few I like, I just haven't pulled the trigger yet.
