I think the wife cost him a very good shot at the UNC job. The common theme on the sports talk shows this evening was that Malzahn wasn't going to be back at Auburn. There must have been a fallout between him and Chizik.

All the national guys are reporting it now.

I still can't believe it, and probably won't until I see the press conference. Malzahn turned down a 5 year 15 million dollar contract from Vandy last year. It sounds like he needs a career coach.

The only way that makes any sense is if Auburn is trying to get rid of him.

Pretty sure auburn is paying him more than a million a year. Isn't he the top paid assistant in the country? Not sure if he is willing to take a paycut. The local talk on the radio is that he's probably going to end up staying in Auburn...for now.

1.3 million, yes. It was mentioned a few posts ago.

Seems like such a step down. Wtf did Chizik do to piss off Malzahn so bad that he had to step down?

FFS dude should be a candidate for the real ASU job. Chizek is a damn idiot and Gus might be too.

Not only that, but he is going to a program that just had their best season ever and is losing most of their starters. I'm not sure what is more astonishing, that Malzahn would accept the job, or that Ark State could come up with 750k a year to pay him.

Ed Cunningham, who I previously thought to be not an idiot, was on ESPN today noting in his opinion the best (Illinois) and worst (Wazzu) hires this year.

Cunningham (who is a UW grad, which I'm sure has nothing to do with anything) claimed that he knows that Leach had lost the team at TT, wasn't coming to work or showing up late, and some other stuff that I've never heard before that you sure think would have come up anywhere else if it was true. He called the hire "a reach".

Reading up on Gus during the UNC coaching search, isn't there a lot of talk that people hate working with him? That seemed to be the speculation when we were looking at him.

I dunno, feel like there is something going on that is not being reported. I knew Auburn would lose Malzahn eventually but ****, Arky St?

OMG, Malzahn was available this year, and for that price???

says a lot about what Ed Cunningham values

He's a boring career track/middle mngmt type thinker. Don't stand out from the pack. etc.

sigh... Illini forums lapping it up

forgot the ESPN message to come out against Leach

I'm banned on II for like the millionth time, so I cannot even respond to getting called out in that thread.
The latest ban is for being negative on the program and AD... haha. They deleted the thread with the post

Malzahn gets a lot of credit. At Arkansas, Nutt couldn't handle Malzahn getting credit. The same thing happened at Tulsa. It seemed like Chizik didn't mind, but I wonder if Malzahn's wifes comments about Chizik not wanting to sign Newton and giving Gus all the credit for signing him produced some fallout.

Maybe he didn't see the "State" part and just thought it was Arkansas? Ha... I'm sure it's one of those "close to home" things also. Weird, the UNC and Vandy job seem so much more attractive now.

RE: Cunningham- I've liked him doing games- tends to seem pretty smart and avoid some of the obvious cliches. Seems like he took a break form being reasonable to be incredibly partisan and bitter.

LOL @ Cunningham really believing that stuff about Leach being the worst hire this year. I'm pretty sure he's just hoping that pushing the company line (Mike Leach bad, James family persecuted innocents) will lead to him moving up the ladder at ESPN.

After seeing that interview with Gus's wife, I would have to question his judgement in all things, or maybe he is hoping she divorces him while he is at Arky St., and then he can cash in after the paperwork is done.
