Pretty sure Indiana sucks at football, I think you're missing the point when debating the merits of Fort Wayne vs Omaha

that's OK that you think that, but my analysis is still fine within my parameters.

I was just trying to do an analysis of schools in states that had only one city > 300k. That's it. I'm not trying to imbue it with meaning.

Re: Bobby Petrino on permanent leave

I question any list that has Illinois a top 25 football program.
Basketball state with little effort into youth and HS football programs and low on state bonding/loyalty over the school.

Like, I truly don't think those in the South realize how much kids in Illinois and Indiana grow up playing basketball and not really caring about football until HS.

Once he's gone we're right back to where we were; A POS state with nothing in it and without enough native talent to compete, an in-state high caliber rival who is also in perfect ****-blocking position to our life-giving pipelines to inordinately-far-away Georgia and Florida, a scourge of new teams in the area who'll probably be appealing enough to keep a recruit or two per year in their area, an administration that was mind bogglingly incompetent until Nick's "I take over and do everything that used to be your job description" policy, and a booster base consisting of many many insane good old boys who'd love to "help" the team once Saban stops telling them to **** off.

My guess is we're back to mediocre within 5 years of CNS leaving, probably aided by NCAA penalties for transgressions beginning 5 minutes after his departure.

Look at the rest of those schools--they all have prominent natural advantages over the field, except for Oklahoma I guess but they don't have the recent quarter century of being a tier 3 school either. Nebraska is kinda as well, but they have an exclusive on their state and they're a very good school also without the generation of crap.

Oh, and Dennis Franchione left Alabama to go to Texas A&M.
Oops, I grunched. But this is entirely correct. Maaaaybe if Saban stays till all the good ole boys die and then we luck into a good replacement. But I still wouldn't be surprised even if Saban retires in 2033, that 50 years later we'll still have all the boosters demanding a direct Bear connection for the next head coach.

Pretty lolbad after Stallings till Saban, what was that, 11 or 12 years? Shenanigans between Bear and Stallings, too.

Total number of heads in one factor. Demographics of those faces is another. The culture that produces those faces is yet another. New York State has a lot of faces and a large working class but Syracuse isn't returning to glory anytime soon.

Someone crunched the numbers this year and concluded Indiana produces per capita the same talent as Ohio but obviously with a smaller total haul.

You give T1s more time to come back from the grave. I've always included Tennesee and Georgia as 1st tier teams even though they have as long a dry spell as Notre Dame.

In fact another test would be the attitude of the fan base with what satisfies them. T1s talk about winning the national championship while T2s tell you how they made a bowl game.

I think there is a tier that is only happy with BCS bowls as well. I know Pitt and WVU are in this category.

So T1 is... Florida, Bama and LSU?

If you use Bammer's method of calculating national titles, Arkansas has about 9 and Arkansas State can probably claim one as well.

Well, the RANGZ in '92 were a friggin' miracle. That whole decade was aided by a weak-ass SECW where frankly today's Mississippi State team would expect to run the table every year. Championship games are coinflips from there. Consistency's easier when you bring in patsies at every opportunity--we actually dropped Southern Mississippi as a frequent opponent because the games were getting too competitive.

We weren't terrible and we did manage to stay on a level above the Mississippi schools. That's what life is like for us without the game's best coach.

Plus there were the 3 cheating scandals over that stretch and I would politely call them a drop in the bucket for what was going on. Now I'm not saying Ray Perkins, Bill Curry, Mike Dubose, Dennis Franchione, or Mike Shula were dirty coaches. I don't know that they weren't, but I don't know that they were. I'm saying they were at least feckless weaklings who never got control of the overfunded overpriveledged booster manchilds who thought of graft as helping the team. No I did not leave Stallings out by accident.

Say what you will about Nick Saban, and I'll mostly join you, but that guy has turned out the cleanest UofA program by a wide margin I have ever seen in my lifetime and probably dating back to the 50s. Oversigning by the letter if not the spirit of the rules? LOL, why don't I just go wait outside a NA meeting and scream at people for smoking cigarettes.

This.

It's hilarious that people hate saban for what amounts to being TOO GOOD at reading and understanding the ****ing rules.

LfreakinOL. Brent Calloway, Christian Jones, T-Rent Richardson, T-town menswear, Landon Collins, the list goes on...Just because ESPN won't run a story on it doesn't mean you have a clean program.

Seriously? 8-10 I guess? 2010,2004,1993,1983 for sure in my lifetime. All of those are certainly more valid than some of yours.

Actually, T-Rent Richardson was just on ESPN this morning. Took a high schooler with cancer to her prom. Seemed like a classy dude.

I said cleanest. As someone who had their own team go though a pay-for-play scandal under Pat Dye, surely you roll your eyes at some of the allegations.

These are all stories out there in the ether but mainly unconfirmed that I'll just not take at face value, thank you. There is a cottage industry for rumors around football programs right now; people pay for dirt--I believe many of them are the same boosters who used to directly pay players themselves, hell now they're not even committing a violation!!! But they really don't give a **** if it's true or not and the people selling the stories have bills to pay. There are always rumors about a number of star players on every team, it seems all anybody wants to do is dismiss the ones about their own team and believe all the others.

You may recall I took exactly the same position with the Cam Newton story, so don't think I'm just a homer. I would still like to hear the tape where Cam "confesses" to, evidently, Dan Mullen's wife about getting too much money from Auburn. You do remember how that was an indisputable fact of that story, right?
