Blitzing Blitzing

Surprised there wasn't a thread on the Patriots/Jets.

The prevent defense has lost thousands of games in the last few decades. Why aren't coaches fired for using prevent.
On 21 plays the Jets blitzed Brady. Brady's passer rating was 19.7 on those plays. It was 81.3 on the other pass plays. Why aren't there more blitzing in the NFL? No QB is any good while running for his life. We need to see more blitzing.

Cowboys should have blitzed last night.

Blitzing, like anything else, becomes less effective the more a team does it.

you need the right personnel and schemes to consistently get good pressure. its also not just about the blitzers, you need good cover dbs who can tackle well or you will give up some monster gainers

Jim Schwartz is basically Bill Parcells minus Lawrence Taylor but plus Megatron.

pretty much this i think. a lot easier to send extra guys when you are comfortable w/moss being single covered

if you can get pressure w/o blitzing and you can't trust your dbs alone in coverage then your pass d is probably going to suck any way you slice it

edit: meant can't get pressure w/o blitzing obv.

also the jets will eventually get burned for some long tds. cant keep blitzing forever and expect fantastic results every time

But you can run vanilla defense without the right personnel?

sure. compare to what mangini liked to do with the jets last year, dropping into prevent and only rushing 3 or 4 whenever the jets had a decent lead. in order for this to be effective, youll need a dominant pass rusher who consistently wins 1v1 matchups, or multiple + pass rushers, which the jets did not have. qbs had all day to find receivers for 5-15 yard gains

its besides the point tho, i was basically answering why all teams dont blitz as much as the jets have so far

The split for rating on blitz/non-blitz was completely opposite for Brees this week.

Same reason coaches aren't fired for punting on 4th & 1 from the opponent's 38 yard line: coaches and owners are meatheads and not statisticians.

The Eagles blitzed, what, like 4 times?

SMIGLET,

That was a rhetorical question.

Passing plays average approximately 7 yards, across the NFL. Rushing plays only average about 4.5 yards. Why the hell does anyone ever run? Wouldn't it be better just to pass every play? You'd get more yards, and score more points!

do you think the disparity in the splits is an issue of sample size? i would tend to think that the low # of blitzes was b/c brees can beat it consistently

iirc Bree's lifetime QB rat is better when facing the blitz then not, could be wrong tho, if so FU espn

There are times you blitz and times you don't. Late in the 4th quarter against Peyton Manning you might want to think twice about it.
Blitzing Quote

that sounds reasonable. a blitz basically guarantees that someone is open somewhere and a qb of brees' caliber will find him often.

not really the same

i think teams generally blitz to the extent that it is effective and it's usually not when you're doing it half the time. i think the real story is that the jets' game plan was successful, b/c in the past blitzing brady that heavily would have been kind of crazy

Blitzing seems like a good idea since you're not allowed to breath on WR's without a flag.

NFL Network did a "top 10 myths" show and one of them was the prevent sucking. They pointed to examples of teams who successfully defended a score with a prevent on hail marry's from 50 yards away. Yah that's obv. the main criticism of the prevent, lol good job NFLN.

This is a problem. But has anyone calculated the QB stats against the prevent? KC/Oak. Oakland couldn't move the ball all game. Final series they drive for a TD. What did KC do differently?
*Okay, I didn't actually see the game. Just guessing KC went on prevent.

QB rating doesn't account for sacks, which are a huge part of the upside of blitzing.
