anyway my point wasn't that Don Fehr signed an agreement to kill the Expos, but the strike he led was a significant factor in the firesale that ensued and the decreasing attendance until the death of the Expos and saying that "the strike had very little effect" is a laughable statement.

you can even see it in the attendance numbers he posted. In 1991, Expos got a new ownership group and the attendance doubled the following year and then grew again in 1994 only to drop by 4k/game in 1995. That's not a coincidence. The strike killed all the goodwill the team was building with its fan base.

of course they sucked, they had to trade every good player and non-tender Larry Walker because they lost too much money because of the strike

and if that's the case, they were operating on a razor thin margin and couldn't afford those players anyway. the strike shouldn't've cost them money beyond what they would have made in the playoffs, which could have been a lot but which also could have been 2 or 3 home games (afaik 94 was the first wild card year). and if you have to make the playoffs in baseball to afford your players you're screwed because making the playoffs is really hard.

look the 94 strike was the WOAT thing to happen to me sports-wise and i really stayed away from baseball for 10 years because of it, but i'm not buying that the strike killed the expos. hurt, yes, killed, no.

baseball hasn't missed a game since 1995. before that iirc it hadn't missed a game since 1981. it came close in 2002 but didn't get there. so yes, there may have been work stoppages, but they didn't result in games missed.

If the strike killed the Expos, why would it take 3 ****ing years for their attendance to change dramatically? Yeah, the strike lowered attendance a bit, but no where near a significant level to call it a killer of the Expos. Getting 10k fans a game for years is what killed your terrible baseball team that for some reason people in Montreal only starting giving a **** about after they left as if their team was improperly taken (unlike the Sonics and Whalers, which were moved far more hastily.)


The Expos also left 10 years after the strike. They bled to death. It wouldn't have taken so long if the strike really had such a horrible impact. Baseball in Canada just isn't very sustainable.
