This whole thing just seems so unnecessary to me. I sincerely hope they lose fans and prospective sponsorship opportunities because of this.
I did, but I don't use twitter that much and can't really understand twitter speak.

I think his point is that if the season is cancelled, everyone involved is pants on head ******ed because they aren't far apart.

That's my interpretation anyway.

What about all you guys who just a week or two ago were saying the season will go on for sure, or like 95% sure. Am I still being paranoid or is anyone else starting to think the season could be lost?
you are being paranoid. the only thing that will cancel a season now is arguing over just how much revenue is being lost by continuing the lockout. the season was canceled on february 15th - that's two and a half months from now.

i'm more optimistic about mediation after what nootka and niss said but also it appears to be a kind of concession on the NHL's part. now why would they make this concession? because they are afraid of decertification. they want to get talks going - maybe they throw a few things the NHLPA's way and this gets settled soon.

Conspiracy theory: NHL needed a year off in order to sort Phoenix / Quebec / Seattle out, and is intentionally tanking a season to do just that.

Another reason I think they agreed is that it's bad PR for them not to agree when the PA has been expressing its interest in mediating.

this is the reason they accepted imo. they turn it down and they take a beating in the media for 'not being willing to negotiate' while not gaining anything, or they accept it and then nothing really changes.

Yeah I understood that. I was my unsuccessful attempt at sarcasm - IMO both sides are proven ******s anyhow based on past performance so present performance should come as a surprise to anyone. If the whole season was lost, it wouldn't surprise me a ton.

Nah, it was definitely to avoid the ASG in Columbus.

Definitely could be a concession based on fear of decert. It also just could be that the NHL thinks that Fehr is being a hindrance by being unreasonable or withholding things from his clients. A mediator can be useful at cutting through some of that garbage. So it could just be the NHL looking for help getting past an impasse.

I have a feeling Fehr would be the most insufferable negotiator ever.

i don't really understand this decertifying. if that happens, are we basically screwed with regards to having a season this year?

No. The NBA filed for decertification and within two weeks the union had reached an agreement with the league. The question is will the NHL fight it hard? I don't think so, but they have to say they will.

Somehow MLB has managed almost 20 years without a strike or lockout, so someone there must've been suffering him.

Did the NBA actually decertify though? I didn't follow the NBA negotations at all really. The NFL union decertified I think in their recent lockout? But IIRC, they did it almost immediately in the lockout process and so there was more time for the legal maneuvering to take shape.

I don't think the NHL union would decertify permanently. They would do so to expedite the bargaining process. I believe the NFL union did decertify and filed an antitrust lawsuit but was eventually denied, and obviously they too reformed.

A mediator can step between Stuart and Bettman before they come to blows.

MS: Tell that puny horned thief he owes me 4 million dollars, not a penny less.
GB: You tell that troglodyte he's the poster child for inflationary stupidity.

lol. Montreal killed the Expos. They were routinely getting less than 10k people at their games. They never averaged over 30k, which is pretty terrible. Even the Marlins average over 30k during their heyday. Even after the strike they were averaging close to what they normally average. After '97 they really dropped off, and they didn't move until 2004. Fehr really had nothing to do with it since the strike had very little effect, and they had plenty of time to recover.
