Didn't Fognini actually win today though?

Julia blew 3 MP's to Bencic returning serve. Of course gets broken right after. Tough way to lose a bet.

Yep it is, defeated twice in a row on clay by Fognini. Especially in a tournament he should be winning, if nadal loses this seasons ****ed imo

His result today has no bearing on how he will do at the other 1000 events on clay, and even less at Roland Garros because it's 3 out of 5 sets.

Yes he used to win every match on clay, but now he's older and he doesn't win every match on clay.

He can still win the French even if he loses today.

Nadal has publicly said his confidence is effed. If he loses today he's gonna be in a bad spot mentally moving forward, especially considering he got smoked by Novak on clay already once this season. The first set, while 6-3, began 2-0 Nadal, meaning Novak essentially beat him 6-1 after that. On clay.

My point is if he's losing to goobers, how is he gonna climb Mt. Novak. And it won't be us asking that, it will be Rafa asking himself.

Congrats to Fog, played great.

On the Rafa thing, confidence is the least of his worries. Tactically he's behind the times and got outplayed by Fognini. The topspin loop to the backhand just ain't cutting it anymore

Winning or losing at the Barcelona 500 won't change that.

I agree with you all on his lack of confidence.

I just disagree winning a 500 will do much for him when going up against Novak.

Needs to start from somewhere, he's not going to magically become in-form for Madrid or Rome.

I guess I'm only saying that beating Fognini on clay and then losing the next round won't restore his confidence either.

So by definition, every match rafa plays for the rest of the year is a must win match. Which isn't true.

2014: lost to Ferrer, Almagro and practically Nishikori, then went on to routine Roland Garros. He could lose to Lorenzi at Madrid and Rome and it still wouldn't say anything.

Zero* chance Nadal wins the French.

*zero meaning more like 10%. He sucks now. 😎😎😎

Edit to add that I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't even make it to Novak there and loses earlier than the semifinals.

I agree with that. It's gonna take quite an effort for Nadal to win a GS this year in his current form.

You're just kidding, right?

Nadal's two biggest qualities are definitely to magically become in-form, and to get injured during matches to get a break, when he gets beat up. And then, ofc quickly back to quality numero uno...
