GK might be worst first pick in a draft due to deep pool, but in a team they are not the least important position. Not the most important but pretty sure not the least.

One thing I would note is that if Lloris was as bad as Danny Rose he would have been replaced long ago. Teams seem willing to accept output defeciences in players at other positions they would never accept at GK.

There is a higher bar set for GKs but the fact that enough GKs exist to fill the spot above that bar does not diminish the importance of the position in a pure tactical sense for the team.

People are conflating two factors, how important is the actual position of keeper with the replacement value of keeper. If you put a terribad keeper in goal it would cause more damage than putting me in at RB, but this is erased in discussion by the fact that there are no terribad keepers.

Cliffs is, just because the replacment value might be lowest between the worst and best keeper does not mean the position of keeper is not really important relative to other positions, the depth of the talent pool is actually independent from the value of each position in a pure tactical sense.

sure, if i had to put oafk on the field then GK is the last place i'd put you. im not sticking you in at fullback either cos you'll end up playing everyone onside. you're probably going in attack in a four four ****ing two and being instructed to use your bulk and veteran wiles to disrupt the CBs

altho saying that it depends on the team. if we're bayern at home vs random bundesliga side then i'll stick you in goal and have 96% possession and you wont even need to touch the ball or do anything other than stand on your line and get in the way if the other team somehow manage to have a 65 yard attempt on goal. might even get you to shout motivational slogans at the CBs altho they'll probably spend most of the game too far away to hear them
