When the Seahawks went to the Cover 3Hawk created by Gus Bradley and the entire league switched into it some version of it, it wasn't all that surprising. It allowed you to bring on a smaller/faster player to be a slot corner and still have the ability to play a safety down against the run. Kam Chancellor helped changed the NFL scheme with that.

I also understood the switch to an under 4 man or even 3 man front when Watt started to dominate the interior of the OL. And teams copied that and even the Donald style that we see teams working now with the stacked backers.

But what I don't understand is the Vic Fangio cover 4 showing up all over the NFL now. I guess its essentially cover 8 at times and cover 6 at other points. But its essentially base cover 4 and you go off of it.

I get that 10 and 11 personnel dominate the NFL now. Even modified Empty. So you have to have cushion and be able to modify a defense. But Ravens sit in cover 1 and Cover 3 mostly. And the 49ers the same. But it's like the 30 other teams want to do this very complicated system and say **** it, the flats are yours but we won't get beat on anything over the middle. I need someone to explain the philosophy to me. It's obviously something teams are looking at because its EVERYWHERE.

Sorry for the rant, just all 3 of the Chiefs, Seahawks and Chargers sat in the cover4/6/8 scheme for multiple plays.

And Pacheco just runs to the open spot vs a ILB trying to run to the flat to cover him. It just is frustrating that it's an opening quarter strategy.

I'd do a screen cap but don't think its necessary but on the Pacheco TD they run the same play just opposite out of modified empty. It's a choice route, the ILB attacks the flat because thats where he needs to be. But Pacheco knows that pre snap and takes a step in that direction, LB flies, WR runs off deep zone DB. Pacheco plants his right foot and runs a quick slant. Noone there because middle zone LB has a crosser come across his face.

I don't get it.

I think I'm talking to an echo chamber here but I just need to finish this.

It's a great overall scheme. It really only has a handful of weaknesses in today's NFL playcalling. So its safe. But you are vulnerable to athletes out of modified empty, like we saw.

What I mean by modified empty is that the RB is still on the field so the defense likes to keep a 2nd LB on the field vs that RB. If they took the RB off and went 5 WR then the LB comes off and you get a true matchup of DB vs WR. But the modified is so teams can matchup against a motion RB to the backfield or whatever teams do, that orbit/jet/bucket motion we see today.

So cover 4 protects that some so that LB isn't on a island vs these athletic RBs. Problem is you just have giant zone holes opening up.

Alright I'm done with that, sorry.

I can't speak to the rest of the echo chamber here, but I just got back here. But, truth is, so much of that is over my head that I think I need to go spend some time in the remedial class.

I'm sure everybody appreciates your input. I'm trying to learn what I can from it, but I'm afraid I'm a D student at best. Thanks for trying to enlighten us!

might be good to create a thread for these kind of posts, needle. can't count how many times i've seen them and been like well this requires 100% of my attention to even have a chance with, i'll come back to it later, and then completely forgot about it. in the gameday threads especially when i'm drinking and watching games (like rn), but also in the season thread when i haven't had the time

idk, just a thought...
