How the hell does WAR even calculate what Ohtani's doing? Like for tonight is it comparing him to DHs offensively as well? What if he was in the National League pitching and batting second? Would it compare him offensively to other pitchers?
I believe the batting & defensive components are calculated separately and then combined, so it wouldn't affect his oWAR. I would guess they compare his defensive innings at pitcher to other pitchers.

Pretty sure this is right. And his positional adjustment is based on where he was at in the lineup the most innings, I believe.

Would anybody know the name Babe Ruth if they had the DH in the 1910s?

Would anyone know the name "Shohei Ohtani" now? Who is this Ohtani of whom you speak?

Also, and this shouldn't be controversial, Babe was a greater hitter than he was a pitcher. As a pitcher, he was worth about two wins per 200 IP. 10.3 per 650 PAs. It wasn't even close. If forced to choose which he would do, he'd have still have regarded as one of the three best (if not the best) of all-time.

Fat pitchers> fat hitters.

Spoiler:
Babe wouldn't be considered fat by modern standards.

Modern nutritionist and training, sheeeit.

I do wonder if what his partying would be like in our culture. That said, maybe he's set straight at an early age.

There's a legit chance Babe might not hang in the current league.

Also, a guy like...... Kyle Seager, etc, might be all time GOATs if transferred back to 1920.

Seems silly to me. If you're allowed a DH, you're allowed a DH, and he should be for anyone IMO.

This is true in pretty much everything, the best athletes in any 1930's sport would look silly competing against today's best. It's only fair to compare against their peers.

1930 Babe would be the worst player in low A by far if you brought him here today.

I mean he pitched so long ago that sliders weren't a thing and it's unlikely any of his contemporary pitchers would be breaking 90 consistently.

Yeah, pitching was probably just BP for the most part.

I saw some video (several minutes uncut footage, but from an awkward side angle) of Babe and Gehrig hitting BP style as an exhibition. I'm absolutely flummoxed because they both looked beyond terrible, I mean truly. But the fact is they both hit hundreds upon hundreds of HRs in big league competition. The guys in the videos had **** swings and were hitting pop-ups and weak grounders.

Is the implosion of Judge and JimCarrey a controlled demolition?

Spoiler:
That's an original joke, lest someone thought I stole that from twitter, although I'm sure the joke has been made by many.

Tom Hamilton, the Cleveland radio guy was going on about Tito and how the FO trusts him to use his gut and not go by some spreadsheet and mid-sentence Buxton crushes a HR after seeing the starter for the 4th time tonight. Pretty funny.

Supposeduly the evidence is pretty strong though that Ruth did indeed hit a bunch of 500-550 foot home runs. It's very hard to believe, but he did use a really heavy bat (like 48 ounces hickory) and had a very odd but powerful swing. Heavier bats aren't used now but may be optimal for maximum distance hitting.

Yeah if you time machined Babe to present day he would suck and if a typical average major leaguer today time machined to 1930 he would be an all-time great.

But ... but if Babe were born 25 years ago and grew up playing baseball he would still be an all-time great now. I think anyway? He obviously had all of the physical and mental attributes to be better at baseball than his peers whatever era those peers are in.

We don't need to dive too deep, modern day athletes like any current pitcher would destroy Ruth and Gehrig.

Yeah and they weren't the custom-made tapered bats of today, but closer to a table leg.

Dunno, I heard Ruth & Gehrig's trash-can banging game was elite.

0.5 fWAR and his xwOBA is 88 points higher than his totally fine .366 wOBA coming into tonight. He's fine.

K rate is down and his 17.3% barrel rate is elite.

Reds were almost 10/1 after going down 5-3 and Dodgers getting runners on base. Inning later and they lead 6-5. Entertaining game.
