These are all interesting ways of looking at it I like the rim protection analogy in particular. There is interchangeability also yes although Ive looked up in the past and the number of players who take significant snaps rushing from the interior and edge was smaller than I expected
I dont have data off teh top of my head regarding how teams with bad interior OL vs tackles do. That's something I could look up but it would take time type of thing best suited for the weekend
I agree with you also that study is probably a little more focused on results over process
We could one day hit the stage where teams have downsized so much that there is a shift towards more running but I dont think we're closed to there for several reasons. One very rough oversimplified general proxy to keep an eye on regarding this: the stat Ive seen is since 2005 teams average 5.6 ypc on the ground vs dime defenses and about 4.4 ypc vs nickel. If we get to the pt dime defenses start becoming more the trend that's when I can see running becoming more of a priority but for now everything in the NFL is still nickel based mostly
