He wanted to get the monkey off his back and went to the team where he thought he was most likely to win a title. Full stop.

Durant did the same thing. The only difference is that he had an opportunity to step into an even more favorable situation. If Lebron at that moment had been given the opportunity to step into a situation where he had 98% title equity, he would have taken it.
If he wanted to win a title at all costs why didn't he go to the Spurs or Celtics then? Hell, he could have gone to the Thunder and played with KD, Harden, and Russ.

Separately, if Durant went to Cleveland this offseason the Warriors slappies would 100% be complaining about it instead of celebrating and glorifying it.

Teaming up with Bosh/Wade/M Miller looked more formidable than joining Boston or SA at that time I would say.

Spurs were considered on the come down then, off the sweep vs Phx and their big 3 were getting old.

And Celts wouldn't have been able to sign him and keep Ray Allen I am pretty sure. Bosh/Wade were considered younger and better than KG/PP at the time as well.

Not like I think he signs with the Celts even if it works out perfectly but it isn't like those options were better than the Heat for perceived ring equity at the time.

He literally could have gone to any team in the league. There is no team that would say "nah, we don't really need LeBron. He isn't much better than what we have and doesn't fit our system." Were the Heat really the best team in the league without him? I don't think so and its not close.

I'm not saying that he was willing to play for the league minimum.

I don't recall it being remotely plausible for any of those teams to sign him.

Yes, Durant stacked the deck much more than LeBron did. But I don't know if you can say LeBron didn't put himself in the best situation possible.

Wade was considered top 5 itl at the time and a legit superstar and Bosh was considered top 10-15.

LeBron did it first but it was still compelling. Durant did it and it went too far and it isn't compelling. And since Durant went to the team that just beat him in the conference finals, it is way, way more bitchmade than just teaming up with your bros.

Seems like we're all going in circles here...

And lastly, thanks sports media for the rangz culture.

But nothing was stopping him from signing a MLE if all he cared about was ring chasing.

The Bulls had max room and probably would have been the SUPERest team Lebron could have formed.

Wade was the 2nd or 3rd best player in the league along with Durant. Wade is a top 15ish all time player. Teaming up with him was easy mode.

Again, if Durant had gone anywhere else he'd have to beat the champion Cavs and 73 win Warriors. Two super teams. Lebron's competition was the last leg Celtics (the Joe Johnson-Josh Smith Hawks were the 3 seed!) and the Mavs. Cool teams but a whole different stratosphere of competition.

There's nothing wrong with what Durant or Lebron did, but to say Durant was more egregious is a bit silly since 1. Both guys went to the best opportunities available 2. Lebron did it twice!

A lot of people won't admit that Lebron did it twice, but he pivoted to a team that was about on par with the heat in year 1, and definitely better every year after that.

But people loved the coming home narrative, partially fueled by Lebrons PR team. The opening line of the letter where he says everything in Cleveland is earned, nothing is given. The rally where he came out to "I'm coming home" and said he got advised to do what's best for himself, but instead decided to do what's best for his state and city (then literally drops the mic)

Completely face melting stuff. Lebron did it twice and somehow it counts as less than once since middle America is so tickled with the coming home story.

That's right cause the Bulls could've got 2 max guys as long as they moved Deng IIRC. Noah and Rose were both still on rookie deals.

So it would've been Rose-Bron-Bosh-Noah

You can't not include the Lakers and Thunder in there.

I think LeBron knew it would've been an uphill battle to just re-sign with Cle or go to the Knicks with Bosh. Why he went above and beyond with Miami.

Good chance KD and Bron are both bitches even though they are the best two talents in the NBA. It happens.

Would say Bron started the super team movement and KD one upped him.

Man remember like the 25 years ago when contracts started getting really big and everyone complained about how athletes were selfish and just wanted money, and why can't they take a little less so their team can win?

Those were the days.

Also a little deep diving reveals Bill Walton as a candidate for first super team ring chaser. Dude was healthy for first time in years and under contract with the clippers. So he straight up told them I'm not playing for you anymore, and took only meetings with the Lakers and Celtics. Forced a trade to the Cs for cornbread maxwell and a first. Celtics steamroll he next year. GG big readhead.

Every team should spend their summer studying film of Zaza Pachulia and teaching their players how to close out like that on defense against the Warriors and Cavs.

JR Smith did it once during the last game against KD. Was the and1 play on his 3. Just didn't injure him.

Yeah, the only thing better than the argument that [INSERT NAME OF GREAT PLAYER] is a cowardly ring chaser is the argument that [INSERT NAME OF GREAT PLAYER] is a cowardly playoff slanker.
