I wanted to wait until after the draft to argue my Jokic pick but I am going on vacation tomorrow so I'll do my best to get it in now. The reason why I felt he was the clear #1 is:
I think you can even argue he might even be on the Steph/Durant tier next year.
If you're still reading I'll try to explain. While it's true that last year he put up the (tied for) best numbers per minute as a second year player of all time, those numbers alone don't tell the whole story. As you all know he started the season playing power forward, then moved to the bench to appease Nurkic. Nikola and the team struggled in that role, so some of his now GOAT 2nd year numbers were negatively affected by a start to the season that was an anomaly in that he will never be playing PF next to a post-up guy who can't post up.
On December 15th he became a starter, and Malone yolo'd and started letting him bring the ball up-court and basically play PG. His /36 numbers after that move are pretty amazing:
23.3pts/13.3rbs/7.0ast/1 st/.9blks/3.3 tov - 64.8TS
25.5pts/8.5rbs/8.1ast/1.1st/.6blk/3.9 tov - 62.9TS
27.1pts/5.0rbs/7.6ast/2.0st/.2blk/3.4 tov - 61.2TS
28.1pts/6.2rbs/4.0ast/1.8st/.9blk/2.4 tov - 61.5TS
The below numbers are Bron, Steph, and Kawhi. Jokic was actually leading everyone in PER post 12/15 as of mid march before they took Hoopdata down (if someone knows how to calculate this now lmk).
So he produced at a similar rate the the best, but that doesn't mean anything unless he can impact the way his team plays right? Check out
the net ratings post 12/15 for players with starters minutes
You've got 3 Warriors, CP3 (who should have been on here but minutes), Kawhi who barely edges out Jokic, then LBJ. What stands out here is that Nikola is the only one near the top of this list who actually plays for a mediocre team, and that's his most telling number and greatest indicator of his impact. He played on a 40 win team, but when he was on the court as a starting center they played like a 58 win team. Kawhi otoh played on a team that won 61 games, and when he was on the court they played like a... 62 win team. This isn't just noise for him either, last year it was the same thing, they were 9.5 points worse with him off the court.
Not only did he put up elite numbers, but when he was on the court
his team was elite.
You can dismiss him all you want because he's never been to the finals or whatever, but the only evidence I see that holds him back from being in the top 4-7 discussion is that he has not done it over a large sample nor played a lot of minutes. They are both valid arguments, but at least with the former we literally have 4 years now of him making mind-bottling jumps that far surpassed even the wildist of Jokic nuthugger's dreams.. Last year in particular--he did this with basically zero rest during the offseason, having to qualify for the Olympics (where he was MVP) then having the play in the Olympics (where he took silver).
I had him and Durant as #1 and #2 itd, with Kawhi #3 then LBJ/Steph further back. If the goal was to win the draft in the minds of TZ, I think KD was the clear #1. My goal is to be the Jesus of TZ spreading the word of the BBall Messiah. And also to lol at CVig because why not.
