I don't know if Norton is as bad as it used to be, but it used to really bog down my old PC(s). I've used AVG for along time and it's never really caused any problems (and it's free). Others use AVAST (also free), so that may also be worth a try too.

I would avoid Norton, back before 1998ish their stuff was fine, but since then it's become a big, bloated monstrosity that slows down your machine horribly.

I've been using Kaspersky, I have no real complaints about it. If you buy any of them directly from their websites, google for coupon codes first. I was able to save $20 on Kaspersky by doing that, and I'm sure the other AV makers have similar things out there.

I used to use the free version of AVG, but when I discovered a worm on my USB drive (got it at school, stupid labs) and scanned the thing with AVG and nothing popped up, that prompted me to find another AV solution. Free AVG is better than nothing, but it's also worse than just about anything else.

My computer had Norton on it when I got it. I've heard that if you try to get rid of it by using add/remove programs, it can damage things as it is removed. Is there a safe and complete way to uninstall ALL the Norton crap from my PC? Using XP.

This thread should have been named "Anti-virus Programs".

I complain about bad thread titles as much as anyone, but come on.

I use Avast and Comodo firewall (both free). They are good but Comodo is slightly annoying sometimes (not slowing down anything but many popups asking if you want allow connections as it has problems remembering the answers).

I absolutely hate Norton. It's a shame it's coming in standard package in many new laptops.

They're all listed here so you can choose for yourself :

Click on the 'comparatives' tab and check out the two current reports.

Cliff notes : NOD32 is consistently one of the best.

Yes, there is a way. Just google "remove norton" or something similar and you'll find what you need.
