Not to mention the time required to solve equations, simple arithmetic errors are killing me! Stuff like missing a negative sign, etc.

Is there a free program out there that will solve equations?

Is there a pay program that will solve it (matlab, mathematica)?

How hard is it to learn to get the program to solve an equation for me?

Will it show the full steps? I'm a math fish, so I'd feel much more comfortable with the results if I could see the work that went into them.

I'm curious what kind of poker-related equations you're trying to solve.

Not entirely sure what you're asking, but Mathematica and Matlab are very powerful - they can solve all sorts of equations (algebraic, differential, etc.) and do all sorts of tedious formal manipulations (like solving integrals for you, simplifying ugly algebraic expressions, etc.). If you're good with the internet you can find free versions of them... and there are plenty of online tutorials for getting used to the syntax.

What type of equation are you looking to solve? Mathematica and Matlab sound like serious overkill for 99.9% of poker related equations.

Personally I prefer Maple as it is fairly user-friendly. Unfortunately it's very pricey and if you don't have access to it at a university it will most likely be out of your price range.

Maxima is a good free program but it is less user-friendly and has a lot less features.

Yep, Mathematica is pretty easy to use. The Solve[] function should do the kind of manipulations you are talking about in the OP:

Some of the stuff it can do is pretty neat too. For example try typing in: "Solve[y == a*x^3 + b*x^2 + c*x + d, x]" then press enter while holding down shift and you get the formula for finding cubic roots (I pity any poor soul who tries to use the resultant formula manually though!).

I use Maple for schoolwork (theoretical physics undergrad) and it does everything I need it to. It also has a tutor function that shows you all the steps it takes to find answers, though I'm not sure whether the tutor function works with everything. I know it works for basic calculus and some other stuff.

Wow, thanks a lot, guys.

That's perfect.
