I just moved HEM and installed postgresql on my new desktop. The auto import is taking a whole lot longer than it used to on my older, slower laptop. I'm talking to the point of crashing stars, not just timing out all over the place.

One of the postgresql.exe's starts gobbling up ~50% (according to process explorer) of my computer's resources and stays at that level. Meanwhile playing more than 4 tables is a joke.

I've tried vacuuming my database and it didn't really help.

Any thoughts? Backup my database and reinstall postgres? Can an older version posgres database be restored to newer versions?

I know there's not much to go on, but I'm pretty darn confused.

Thank you.

Do you ever clean and defrag that hard drive?

You could also try to optimize your SQL settings. I found this on the PT3 forums. I only did it the other day, and my HM was already running pretty good, so I can't say how much this will help.

PokerTracker 3 uses PostgreSQL as database system. There are quite a few settings in PostgreSQL that the average user may miss out on that can improve your performance immensely. By default, PostgreSQL is configured for quite outdated hardware and I'll list a few memory related settings that you can change to improve your PostgreSQL (and PT3) performance. I personally made the changes listed below to my PostgreSQL configuration and fired up the "Summary" tab in PT3 with a 1.4 million hand database. Before making these changes, it took me 37 minutes to load the tab. After the tweak, it only took 5 minutes.

First of all, go Start->Programs->PostgreSQL->Configuration Files->Edit postgresql.conf.

Find "shared_buffers = xMB" and set this number equal to about 1/4 of your total memory. That is, if you have 2GB of RAM, set this to 512MB.
Find "work_mem = xMB" and set this value equal to about 1/64 of your total memory. That is, if you have 2GB of RAM, set this to 32MB.
Find "maintenance_work_mem = xMB" and set this value equal to about 1/16 of your total memory. That is, if you have 2GB of RAM, set this to 128 MB.

Note that work_mem and maintentance_work_mem by default are commented out in the configuration file (e.g. has a # in front of them), so make sure to remove those symbols to put the changes into effect.

Now, save the document (File -> Save) and then go Start->Programs->PostgreSQL->Reload Configurations for the changes to take effect.

Vista users:
If you receive an error message saying that the file can't be written when you try to save the configuration file after having made these changes, make sure that you're running as administrator. To do that, go Start->Programs->PostgreSQL->Configuration Files and now right-click on "Edit postgresql.conf" and choose "Run as administrator".

The computer that it's running slowly on is brand new (days). I shouldn't need to defrag it yet?

I tried optimizing my settings, and am still experience difficulties when importing. When switching between reports, sessions, etc. it runs normally.

I'm going to backup my database and reinstall posgresQL.

Thanks for the reply Fozzy, hopefully we figure something out.

Do you have version 1.06.02 of Hm on both machines? Do you have UAC turned off, or all your poker apps set to 'Run as Admin'?

If you still have issues you should be contacting Hm support on their sight.

I created a new database and it seems to import fine. Something was corrupted in when backing up the old database?
